Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The FARMHOUSE with dwelling and Flemish barn, part of the complex at Kromme Elleboog 1 in Binnenmaas, was built in 1912 as a single construction. The building style is a combination of Reorientation towards traditional building methods and Rationalism. The dwelling and barn are well maintained and scarcely altered. The front facade of the barn has been recently repointed.
Description
The object consists of a residential section and an agricultural and livestock barn of the Flemish barn type with side wing with access at the right side of the dwelling. The floor plan, composed of two rectangles, is provided in both dwelling and barn with one storey under half-hipped gabled roofs, both covered with muffled crossed roof tiles. The barn is constructed around spanning cross-ties with anchor beams.
The facades are constructed in red brick in Flemish bond. In the facades of the dwelling, streaks of green glazed brick have been inserted at the level of the under and middle lintels of the windows with sash windows. These right-angled windows are provided with glazing bars in the front facade; in the side facades the fanlights are divided in two. Above the artificial stone lintels, segmental arches in orange brick have been inserted in the front facade. Artificial stone is also used in the finishing of the cornice-topped facade with inset corners. The front facade is further decorated with ornamental cast-iron wall anchors.
The asymmetrical front elevation (north side) of the farmhouse consists of the symmetrical front facade of the dwelling and the recessed facade of the barn. The taller and wider barn is provided with a truncated gable with a mortared breastwork with pilasters on the two corners. Directly below this a round window with radial glazing bars has been inserted in the facade. At the far right the framed double wooden cart door is placed, under a white-painted lintel. Directly above this stands a segmentally arched window with cast-iron frame.
The symmetrical cornice-topped facade with inset corners of the dwelling is inset. The five-bay wide facade has an entrance in the middle. The renewed front door is located in a porch that is framed by a round arch of orange brick. An iron pulling rod is installed within the arch. On either side of this entrance are two windows. In the attic storey stand three windows. The profiled projecting wooden cornice is supported by wooden brackets. Between the brackets lies a tile frieze.
The asymmetrical rear facade of the barn has, like the front side, a truncated gable with breastwork and corner pilasters. Directly below this a round window of almost two metres in diameter with radial glazing bars has been inserted. Below left is a double opening cart door within a right-angled wall opening.
The asymmetrical left side facade consists of one wall plane, but is subdivided in the facade of the dwelling and the facade of the barn. The facade of the dwelling has two sash windows. In the facade of the barn segmentally arched windows with cast-iron frames alternate with wooden doors. This facade layout belongs to the cattle shed.
The asymmetrical right side facade consists of the recessed facade of the dwelling and the facade of the barn. The facade of the dwelling is asymmetrically subdivided into one window at the far left and two windows and a door with fanlight at the far right of the facade. In the facade of the barn five segmentally arched cast-iron windows are placed at regular intervals. Diagonally below the middle window is a small wooden door within a right-angled wall opening.
The interior of both dwelling and barn is fairly intact. The dwelling has a central corridor with small rooms on either side, some provided with bed alcove doors. In the barn the original spanning cross-ties with anchor beams are present. The layout of threshing floor in the central section, cattle shed along the left side facade and horse shed along the rear facade is still recognisable.
Valuation
The farmhouse is of general interest because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a link in the development of the farmhouse type with Flemish barn and dwelling in line with the barn and as a good example of Reorientation towards traditional building methods in agricultural architecture. The farmhouse has ensemble value because of the spatial-functional and visual coherence with the other complex components and because of the completely free-standing location. The farmhouse is also of importance because of its recognisability and the high degree of integrity.
