Inleiding
Voormalige KOESTAL (hoofdgebouw) met bijbehorende vijfde STAL, hoofdonderdeel van het complex "Melkerij Hofstede Oud-Bussem", gebouwd in 1903-1905 naar ontwerp van K.P.C. de Bazel. Het grote gebouw bestond uit vier stalgedeelten en bood plaats aan 144 koeien, de vijfde stal aan 40 koeien. De stallen waren op de meest moderne wijze ingericht, de zolders fungeerden voor de opslag van hooi. Op het binnenterrein bevonden zich twee verdiept liggende mestgoten waardoor de mest uit de stallen middels een door een paard getrokken kar werd afgevoerd naar de mestput ten oosten van het stalgebouw. Het gebouw ligt deels op het grondgebied van de gemeente Naarden en deels in de gemeente Huizen.
N.B. Tussen het hoofdgebouw en de vijfde stal staat een moderne, glazen verbindingsgang (1980) die voor de bescherming van ondergeschikt belang is.
Omschrijving
Het symmetrisch opgezette hoofdgebouw heeft een U-vormige plattegrond en bestaat uit drie vleugels rond een binnenhof. De vleugels tellen elk één bouwlaag onder drie haaks op elkaar aansluitende schild- en zadeldaken die met riet zijn gedekt. In het midden van de lange hoofdvleugel bevindt zich een centrale rondboogvormige poort in een puntgevel onder steekkap. Op de kruising van de steekkap en het hoofddak staat een zeskantig klokkentorentje met gemetselde basis en een lantaarn van rondbogen waarin het uurwerk hangt. Het rieten koepeldakje heeft een iets uitzwenkende dakvoet. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in bruine baksteen en vlak onder de goot voorzien van een tandlijst en waterlijst. De gevels bevatten twaalfruits (stal)vensters (oorspronkelijk negenruiters) met luiken die paarsgewijs zijn gegroepeerd. In de dakschilden bevinden zich kleine getoogde dakkapellen in twee lagen boven elkaar. De grotere rondboogvormige dakkappellen bevatten oorspronkelijk de dubbele hooiluiken. In de puntgevel van de poort bevinden zich twee gevelstenen met het opschrift "Hofstede" en "Oud-Bussem". Aan weerszijden van de poort twee deuren onder vierruits bovenlichten en in de geveltop twee vierkante zoldervensters met luiken onder een roosvenster. Dubbele staldeuren gehandhaafd. STAL 5 heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond onder rieten schilddak met steekkap. Een bouwlaag opgetrokken in bruine baksteen met kleine stalvensters met luiken. In de dakschilden ook kleine halfronde dakkapellen.
Waardering
Het hoofdgebouw uit 1903-1905 met vijfde stal, deel uitmakend van het complex "Melkerij Hofstede oud-Bussem", is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als uitwendig grotendeels gaaf bewaard gebleven hoofdonderdeel van het complex met bijzondere oorspronkelijke functie en als één van de hoogtepunten uit het oeuvre van de architect K.P.C. de Bazel. Het hoofdgebouw heeft tevens situationele waarde vanwege de historisch-functionele en stilistische samenhang met de overige complexonderdelen en de ligging op het landgoed Oud-Bussem.

Former COWSHED (main building) with associated fifth STABLE, principal component of the complex "Melkerij Hofstede Oud-Bussem", built in 1903-1905 after a design by K.P.C. de Bazel. The large building consisted of four stable sections and provided space for 144 cows, the fifth stable for 40 cows. The stables were fitted out in the most modern manner, the lofts served for the storage of hay. On the inner courtyard were two sunken manure gutters through which the manure from the stables was removed by means of a cart drawn by a horse to the manure pit east of the stable building. The building is situated partly on the territory of the municipality of Naarden and partly in the municipality of Huizen.
N.B. Between the main building and the fifth stable stands a modern glass connecting passage (1980) which is of subordinate importance for the designation.
Description
The symmetrically arranged main building has a U-shaped floor plan and consists of three wings around an inner courtyard. The wings each have one storey under three hipped and saddle roofs which meet at right angles and are covered with reed thatch. In the middle of the long main wing is a central round-arched gate in a pointed gable beneath a thrust roof. At the intersection of the thrust roof and the main roof stands a hexagonal bell tower with a built-up base and a lantern of round arches in which the clockwork hangs. The thatched cupola roof has a slightly outswinging eaves line. The facades are built of brown brickwork and immediately below the gutter are provided with a dentil course and drip moulding. The facades contain twelve-pane (stable) windows (originally nine-pane) with shutters which are grouped in pairs. In the roof slopes are small arched roof dormers in two layers one above the other. The larger round-arched roof dormers originally contained the double hay doors. In the pointed gable of the gate are two facade stones with the inscription "Hofstede" and "Oud-Bussem". On either side of the gate two doors beneath four-pane fanlights and in the gable top two square loft windows with shutters beneath a ocular window. Double stable doors retained. STABLE 5 has a rectangular floor plan beneath thatched hipped roof with thrust roof. One storey built of brown brickwork with small stable windows with shutters. In the roof slopes also small half-round roof dormers.
Valuation
The main building of 1903-1905 with fifth stable, forming part of the complex "Melkerij Hofstede Oud-Bussem", is of general importance for its cultural- and architectural-historical value as the principal component of the complex, externally preserved largely intact with exceptional original function and as one of the highlights of the oeuvre of architect K.P.C. de Bazel. The main building also possesses contextual value for its historical-functional and stylistic coherence with the other complex components and its location on the Oud-Bussem estate.
