Omschrijving

- Vanwege de ouderdom;

- Vanwege de eenvoudige, harmonieuze en doelmatige vormgeving;

- Vanwege de karakteristieke situering aan de straat, waarbij de voorgevels van het hoofdgebouw en het koetshuis een gesloten front vormen dankzij een verbindende muur;

Description

ENSEMBLE of COACH HOUSE and WALL belonging to the country house BALJUWHUIS. To the north-west of the main building lies the former coach house. The facades of both buildings are aligned on the street and are connected to each other by a wall. The coach house is built on a rectangular plan and constructed of red brick. It consists of one storey and an attic under a gabled roof covered with dampened Dutch tiles. Originally, the front contained the coach section (now garage), adjoining the stable, and at the rear initially a 'cook kitchen' and later a coachman's residence. This functional division is still recognisable both internally and externally. In the bell gable on the Plein centraal, two double carriage doors, above them a double hoist door with multi-paned fanlight. In the eastern side facade, three double casement windows with small glazing bars (one of which has partly disappeared as a result of a later extension between the house and the coach house) and two simple access doors with multi-paned fanlights. In the pointed gable at the rear, an eccentrically placed access door and to its right two wooden cross windows, provided with multi-paned windows and half shutters. In the top a window as on the ground floor. On the west side a neighbouring building adjoins. Between the main building and the coach house, a red brick garden wall, which is articulated by irregularly placed lesene-like buttresses. On the wall a brick roll course. In the western section a simple arched door. The wall currently forms the outer facade of a 20th-century extension between the main building and the coach house. The coach house is several years older than the main building; it dates from 1730. The connecting wall presumably was erected between 1730 and 1745. Internally, in the middle section, a brick pavement, beam ceiling and horse boxes from the second half of the 19th century. The boxes are separated from the space by man-height walls: wood below and cast-iron lattice work above. Along the walls wooden wainscoting connecting to the aforementioned partitions with above it a strip of white tiles; against the eastern wall a tap with sandstone draining tub. In the former coachman's residence a beam ceiling, simple fireplace (west) and two former bedsteads (north). In the north wall an access to the cellar and a sandstone sink.

The ENSEMBLE of COACH HOUSE and GARDEN WALL belonging to the country house BALJUWHUIS is of general importance:

- Because of its age;

- Because of its simple, harmonious and functional design;

- Because of its characteristic siting on the street, whereby the front facades of the main building and the coach house form a closed front thanks to a connecting wall;

- Because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country house.
