Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The WATER TOWER was designed in 1931 on the commission of Foundation Drinking Water Pipeline 'De Elf Gemeenten' by architects C.B. Posthumus Meyjes and J.J. van der Linden, while the Technical Advisory Office of the Association of Dutch Municipalities in Amersfoort was responsible for the construction. The execution was carried out by Siemens Bauunion (Berlin) and N.V. Contractor Company formerly N.M. Bollen in Hilversum. From the beginning of the 20th century concrete found increasingly wide application in utilitarian construction and thus also in the construction of water towers, both in the load-bearing structure and for the reservoir. In addition to open concrete load-bearing structures, especially closed structures, with or without columns, were applied. Nationally, the water tower at Meije fulfilled a pioneering function, because the tower, like that at St. Jansklooster (1932), was built with the aid of sliding formwork, which was pushed upward with the progress of construction and reused. At St. Jansklooster the tower is clad in brickwork, while at Meije the structure was left exposed. The Functionalist architecture of the water tower at Meije, which was painted white in 1977, shows affinity with that at Meerkerk (1936), which was realised by the same advisory office.
The water tower is strikingly severely styled and lies clearly recognizable in the open landscape of Polder Nieuwkoop and Noorden near the Kromme Meije.
Description
A water tower approximately 58 metres high and circular in plan with a conical roof, beneath which a crenellated frieze. The tower is constructed entirely of reinforced concrete according to a sliding formwork system. The slightly overhanging base is covered with gravel concrete. The double steel entrance door (south side) is located beneath a canopy and is accessible by means of four steps. The shaft is articulated by slit windows, fitted with three-pane steel windows. Internally beneath ground level there is a basement. Above this is a high open space which has an articulation at approximately 10 and 20 metres height with an open star-shaped structure and at approximately 34 metres height is closed off by a solid concrete floor. The original iron stairs connect the various storeys in a zigzag manner. Resting on cross walls above the concrete floor is a concrete open hollow-bottom reservoir with a diameter of 8.6 metres and a capacity of 450 m³.
Valuation
The water tower is of general importance for cultural- and architectural-historical value:
- as an intact and representative example from the development of drinking water supply in the Netherlands.
- for the exceptional technical construction method of the sliding formwork technique. The tower is very intact in main form, detailing and material use of both interior and exterior.
- for its characteristic form-giving related to use and construction and occupies a particular place within the architectural oeuvre of architects C.B. Posthumus Meyjes and J.J. van der Linden.
The water tower possesses urban design value to a high degree as an important point of recognition and orientation in the Polder of Nieuwkoop and Noorden.
