Former COAL SHED in Art Nouveau style, built in 1908 to the design of architect P.N. Leguit, commissioned by the firm H.J. Vonk and Zoon on behalf of his father-in-law. The end gables of the shed are situated on the Kanaalkade and the Koningsstraat and contain various entrance sections. The location was functional in relation to the supply of coal over water (Kanaalkade) and distribution through the city (Koningsstraat). Description

The three-aisle shed has an elongated rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey with a raised central section beneath a gabled roof. Above the side aisles are lean-to roofs and in the side gables of the raised broad central nave are horizontal window strips with glazing bars. The gables are constructed in red brick laid in English bond with horizontal decorative bands of yellow brick. The same yellow brick is used as accents in the reveals and arches above the windows.

The end gables on the street side are both divided into three bays by four pilasters. The pilasters are built slightly above the roofline and are topped with natural stone coping. The high and broad central bay is terminated horizontally by a wide frieze decorated with buttons. In the middle of the frieze is a rectangular plaque inscribed "Anno 1908" between pilasters that extend above the roofline and are topped with natural stone plates. The outer bays have an angled termination with plastered herringbone arch motif beneath a cornice. In the central section of the gable on the Kanaalkade (NE) on the ground floor are two sets of double carriage doors with small glazing bars in the fanlights and sidelights beneath a lintel. In the outer left bay is a double carriage door with small glazing bars in the fanlights and on the right a triple door. On the left there is a fourth entrance section with double door beneath a fanlight in a flat-topped gable section. Above the doors in the central bay was a frieze inscribed with the text H.J. VONK AND SON. Above the doors in the central section is a large arched composite window section consisting of four six-pane windows on either side of a narrow three-pane light beneath fanlights with small glazing bars. In the raised right gable bay is a rectangular bay window and above it a coupled arched window (1950). In the central bay of the gable on the Koningsstraat (SW) on the ground floor are three windows and in the outer bays one window. The entrance section is located on the right in a flat-topped gable section. On the upper storey is a large arched composite window section comparable to that in the Kanaalkade gable. The central coupled six-pane window is separated by two brick mullions from the outer six-pane windows. In the fanlights is small glazing bar work.

INTERIOR. The original complex timber roof truss structure with columns on brick piers and rafters with collar ties from the time of construction has been preserved.
