Inleiding
(Voormalig) KAASPAKHUIS in Art Nouveau-trant, gebouwd in 1905 naar ontwerp van de Alkmaarse architect P.N. Leguit. De jaartalsteen 1647 en de gevelsteen met de boom verwijzen naar bierbrouwerij "De Boom" die op deze plek gevestigd was en waarvan het Biermuseum (Houttil 1) een restant is. Het voormalige kaaspakhuis ligt met de voorgevel aan de Houttil en de achtergevel aan het water van de Voordam in de nabijheid van de kaasmarkt van Alkmaar.
Omschrijving
Breed pand van vier bouwlagen, opgetrokken uit bruine baksteen met sierbanden van gele baksteen, onder een afgeknot zadeldak met rode geglazuurde tuile du Nordpannen. Het afgeplatte schilddak wordt aan weerszijden afgesloten door afgeknotte tuitgevels. De symmetrisch ingedeelde voor- en achtergevel tellen elk zes vensterassen en zijn voorzien van hoeklisenen die iets boven de daklijst zijn opgemetseld. De vensters, met openslaande onderramen of schuiframen, en de dubbele deuren hebben merendeels een sierroedenverdeling. Boven de gevelopeningen overwegend strekken, boven de vensters in de vierde bouwlaag lateien met een geprofileerde onderrand. De gootlijst is gedeeltelijk gekornist en wordt ondersteund door consoles.
De voorgevel aan de Houttil (NW) bestaat uit twee symmetrische geveldelen aan weerszijden van een hoog opgaande middenliseen met sierankers in Art Nouveautrant en een sierbolbekroning. In de middelste vensterassen van beide geveldelen op de begane grond en eerste verdieping dubbele laaddeuren met bovenlicht en in de buitenste vensterassen vensters met openslaande onderramen. Op de tweede en derde verdieping schuifvensters met sierroedenverdeling in de bovenlichten. In de middelste vensterassen zijn de vensters gekoppeld en daartussen bevinden zich de jaartalstenen met 1647 en 1905. De achtergevel aan het Voordam (ZO) heeft dezelfde gevelindeling als de voorgevel maar zonder middenliseen. Op de eerste (verhoogde) bouwlaag dubbele deuren tussen vensters. In het midden van de begane grond een natuurstenen reliëf, voorstellende een boom in een omlijsting, met in de top een engelenkopje. Op de verdiepingen vensters met sierroedenverdeling, die boven de deuren iets breder zijn uitgevoerd. In de dakschilden aan de voor- en achtergevel bevinden zich vier identieke dakkapellen onder lessenaardak met kruisvensters en geprofileerde daklijst. Tussen de dakkapellen aan de zijde van de Voordam een derde kleinere dakkapel.
Waardering
Het (voormalige) kaaspakhuis uit 1905 is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur-, cultuurhistorische en typologische waarde als representatief en uitwendig grotendeels gaaf voorbeeld van een voor Alkmaar kenmerkend kaaspakhuis in de trant van de Art Nouveau. Het grote pand heeft tevens situationele waarde door de beeldbepalende ligging bij de kaasmarkt in het centrum van Alkmaar.

(Formerly) CHEESE WAREHOUSE in Art Nouveau style, built in 1905 after a design by the Alkmaar architect P.N. Leguit. Description
Broad building of four storeys, built of brown brick with decorative bands of yellow brick, under a truncated gabled roof with red glazed Tuile du Nord tiles. The flattened hipped roof is closed on both sides by truncated spout gables. The symmetrically divided front and rear facades each count six window bays and are provided with corner pilasters that are built up slightly above the roof line. The windows, with casement sashes or sash windows, and the double doors mostly have decorative glazing bars. Above the facade openings predominantly lintels, above the windows on the fourth storey lintels with a moulded underside. The cornice is partly corniced and is supported by consoles.
The front facade on the Houttil (NW) consists of two symmetrical facade sections on either side of a tall rising central pilaster with ornamental wall anchors in Art Nouveau style and a decorative ball finial. In the middle window bays of both facade sections on the ground floor and first storey double loading doors with fanlight and in the outer window bays windows with casement sashes. On the second and third storeys sash windows with decorative glazing bars in the fanlights. In the middle window bays the windows are coupled and between them are situated the date stones with 1647 and 1905. The rear facade on the Voordam (SE) has the same facade layout as the front facade but without a central pilaster. On the first (raised) storey double doors between windows. In the centre of the ground floor a natural stone relief, representing a tree in a frame, with an angel head at the top. On the storeys windows with decorative glazing bars, which above the doors are executed somewhat wider. In the roof slopes at the front and rear facades are located four identical roof dormers under a lean-to roof with cross windows and moulded roof line. Between the roof dormers on the Voordam side a third smaller roof dormer.
Valuation
The (former) cheese warehouse from 1905 is of general importance because of its architectural, cultural-historical and typological value as a representative and externally largely intact example of a cheese warehouse characteristic of Alkmaar in the Art Nouveau style. The large building also has situational value through its image-determining location at the cheese market in the centre of Alkmaar.
