Inleiding
BEGRAAFPLAATSTERREIN uit 1829-1830, hoofdonderdeel van het complex Algemene Begraafplaats Alkmaar. De oorspronkelijke aanleg van de begraafplaats bestond uit drie eilanden die door waterpartijen van elkaar gescheiden waren: links van de als geloofsscheiding fungerende centrale waterpartij twee kleine ronde eilanden bestemd voor protestanten en in de rechter helft een groot eiland met een ingesnoerde ovaalvorm voor katholieken.
N.B. De uit 1950 daterende aula bij de ingang maakt geen deel uit van de bescherming.
Omschrijving
Op een nagenoeg vierkant terrein van ruim 200 bij 200 meter aangelegde begraafplaats die voorbij het monumentale poortgebouw door een slingerende en diepliggende waterpartij in twee gedeelten wordt gescheiden. In het voor protestanten bestemde linker deel (ZW) zijn de twee ronde eilanden nog herkenbaar, onder meer door geringe hoogteverschillen en de vorm van de waterpartij. Ook hebben beide "eilanden" nog steeds rondom een pad. De oorspronkelijke vorm van het voor katholieken bestemde rechter deel (NO) is minder duidelijk herkenbaar. De aan de centrale waterpartij grenzende zuidrand van dit grafveld heeft nog wel de oorspronkelijke gebogen vorm. De graven binnen de drie eilanden zijn sinds de aanleg in rechte rijen gelegd. Van de twee kneppelbruggen over de centrale waterpartij vormt de voorste de verbinding tussen beide begraafplaatsdelen.
Waardering
Het begraafplaatsterrein is van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als historisch-functioneel hoofdonderdeel van het complex Algemene Begraafplaats Alkmaar en als kenmerkend voorbeeld van een in Engelse landsschapsstijl ontworpen begraafplaats uit het tweede kwart van de 19de eeuw.

BURIAL GROUND TERRAIN from 1829-1830, principal component of the General Cemetery Alkmaar complex. The original layout of the cemetery consisted of three islands separated from each other by water features: to the left of the central water feature serving as a religious division two small round islands intended for Protestants and in the right half a large island with a constricted oval form for Catholics.
N.B. The hall dating from 1950 at the entrance is not part of the protection.
Description
A cemetery laid out on an approximately square site of just over 200 by 200 metres which beyond the monumental gate building is divided into two sections by a winding and sunken water feature. In the left part (SW) intended for Protestants the two round islands are still recognisable, among other things through slight height differences and the form of the water feature. Both "islands" also still have a path all the way around them. The original form of the right part (NE) intended for Catholics is less clearly recognisable. The south edge of this burial field bordering the central water feature still has the original curved form. The graves within the three islands have been laid out in straight rows since the original layout. Of the two wooden bridges over the central water feature the front one forms the connection between both cemetery sections.
Valuation
The burial ground terrain is of general importance for its cultural and architectural-historical value as a historically-functional principal component of the General Cemetery Alkmaar complex and as a characteristic example of a cemetery designed in English landscape style from the second quarter of the 19th century.
