Inleiding
Omstreeks 1930 in expressionistische stijl gebouwde AULA op de gemeentelijke begraafplaats van Maarssen. De aula is qua type verwant aan een exemplaar uit 1927, ontworpen door P.J. Vermaak, op de gemeentelijke begraafplaats van Bilthoven. De aula is gelegen op de middenas, bij de hoofdentree van de in 1930 gestichte begraafplaats. Deze entree is gesitueerd aan de zuidoostzijde, aan de Straatweg langs de rivier de Vecht. Tegen de noordzijde van de aula is later (XXB) een aanbouw gezet van hout en glas.
Omschrijving
De aan de Straatweg op de gemeentelijke begraafplaats gelegen vrijstaande aula is opgetrokken op een achthoekige plattegrond en telt één bouwlaag onder een leien gedekt koepeldak. De gevels zijn uitgevoerd met een trasraam van grauwe baksteen en daarboven opgetrokken in rode steen in kruisverband. In de verdiept liggende gevelvelden zijn twee hooggeplaatste gekoppelde liggende glas-in-loodvensters aangebracht. De vensters zijn in het midden uitgevoerd met een kruismotief.
De voorgevel of zuidgevel bevat een dubbele deur. Alternerend is in het koepeldak in vier zijden een dakkapel aangebracht. Het interieur is uitgevoerd met houten banken met verticale hoekelementen. De oorspronkelijke houten kapconstructie is aan het zicht onttrokken door een later aangebracht plafond.
Waardering
Van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een aula in expressionistische stijl uit 1930. Van cultuurhistorische waarde als relict van de funeraire cultuur. Tevens van ensemblewaarde vanwege de ligging op de gemeentelijke begraafplaats.

Introduction
Around 1930 an CHAPEL built in expressionist style on the municipal cemetery of Maarssen. The chapel is in type related to an example from 1927, designed by P.J. Vermaak, on the municipal cemetery of Bilthoven. The chapel is situated on the central axis, at the main entrance of the cemetery founded in 1930. This entrance is situated on the south-east side, on the Straatweg along the River Vecht. Against the north side of the chapel a later (second half of the 20th century) extension of wood and glass was placed.
Description
The free-standing chapel situated on the Straatweg on the municipal cemetery is built on an octagonal plan and comprises one storey under a slate roof with a dome. The facades are executed with a stone plinth of grey brick and above built up in red brick in English bond. In the recessed facade fields are two high-placed coupled horizontal stained-glass windows. The windows are executed in the middle with a cross motif.
The front or south facade contains a double door. Alternately in the dome roof on four sides a roof dormer is arranged. The interior is executed with wooden benches with vertical corner elements. The original wooden roof truss structure is concealed from view by a later installed ceiling.
Evaluation
Of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as an example of a chapel in expressionist style from 1930. Of cultural-historical value as a relic of funerary culture. Also of ensemble value because of its location on the municipal cemetery.
