Voormalig HOOFDGEBOUW en POORT (1) als eerste onderdeel van het complex Wilhelmina Gasthuis in 1891-1893 gebouwd in opdracht van de gemeente Amsterdam en ontworpen door de architect H. Leguyt van de dienst Publieke Werken. De bakstenen gevels van het U-vormige gebouw met zijvleugels ter weerszijden, zijn opgetrokken in neo-renaissance stijl. De centraal gesitueerde poort met dubbele halfronde deur en glas-in-lood bovenlicht is geaccentueerd als middenrisaliet met halfkolommen ter weerszijden, waarboven een groot raam, de naam van het ziekenhuis en een natuurstenen renaissance-topgevel, met het wapen van Amsterdam.
De tongewelfde doorgang heeft een bekleding met geglazuurde bakstenen (crèmekleurig) en groene gordelbogen, rustend op aan beide zijden vier grijsblauwe granieten Dorische zuilen en twee dito halfzuilen, met terzijden houten paneeldeuren met neo-Renaissance omlijstingen. Ter weerszijden van de poort identieke vleugels met een begane grond, verdieping en kapverdieping, in een ritme van telkenmale vier ramen en een risaliet; in totaal telt de voorgevel van de middenvleugel 22 vensterassen. In de gevels speklagen van gele baksteen en twaalf-ruits ramen. De vier vensterassen diepe zijvleugels zijn een verdieping hoger en identiek gedetailleerd. Boven de lijstgevel zijn drie topgevels op de hoeken en in het midden. Aan de west- en oostzijde bevindt zich een gaanderij met halfronde scheibogen, voorzien van gietijzeren kolommen en fantasiekapitelen, piëdestals op een verhoogd bordes. Inwendig vrijwel geheel gewijzigd bij renovatie en verbouwing tot woningen. Aan de westzijde zijn in de gangen nog de oorspronkelijke omlijstingen van de deuren te zien. Mogelijk bevinden zich hier boven de verlaagde plafonds nog de gemetselde troggewelven.
Waardering
Uit 1891-1893 daterend voormalige hoofdgebouw met poort is van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische en typologische waarde als eerst uitgevoerde onderdeel van het voormalige Wilhelmina Gasthuis, in een voor de bouwtijd en functie kenmerkende neo-Renaissancestijl, tevens refererend aan het zeventiende-eeuwse Pesthuis. Voorts ensemble waarde in historisch-functionele relatie tot de overige delen van het complex.

Former MAIN BUILDING and GATE (1) as the first component of the Wilhelmina Gasthuis complex built in 1891-1893 on behalf of the municipality of Amsterdam and designed by architect H. Leguyt of the Public Works department. The brick facades of the U-shaped building with side wings on either side are constructed in neo-Renaissance style. The centrally situated gate with double arched door and leaded glass fanlight is accentuated as a central risalit with half-columns on either side, above which a large window, the name of the hospital and a natural stone Renaissance topped gable with the coat of arms of Amsterdam.
The barrel-vaulted passage has cladding with glazed bricks (cream-coloured) and green belt arches, resting on four grey-blue granite Doric columns and two half-columns on either side, with timber panelled doors with neo-Renaissance surrounds on the sides. On either side of the gate identical wings with a ground floor, first floor and attic storey, in a rhythm of four windows each and a risalit; in total the front facade of the middle section counts 22 window bays.
