Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The convent Mariadal or "Klein Marienthal" was founded at the end of the 19th century during the Kulturkampf by German sisters. Until 1982 it was the only convent of the Dominican Sisters of the Second Order (contemplative) in the Netherlands. The building history begins around 1881 with a residential wing and convent chapel (north side). In 1889 the rector's residence was built in the extension of the convent chapel. In 1902 perpendicular to the existing wing in an eastern direction the large external chapel was built to the design of architect Baeten from Roermond. The external chapel was also intended for the local parish community. The south, west and a part of the north wing likewise date from around 1900. On the south side stands the former convent farmhouse: this was substantially renovated in 1982 and remains outside the protection.
Description
Convent building consisting of four wings in a quadrangular form with two convent chapels. The building material used is brick and natural stone. The gabled roofs are covered with slate. The EXTERNAL CHAPEL dates from 1902 and was built to the design of architect Baeten from Roermond. Entrance section on the street side with church doors with wrought-iron fittings; pointed-arch-shaped fanlight with tracery. High three-part leaded glass window at the top of the church door. Gable apex with pointed-arch-shaped spandrels; buttresses. Side facades with high leaded glass windows between buttresses. Gabled roof with slate and small bell tower. Interior with organ gallery furnished with new balustrade. Chapel floor renewed around 1990; ceiling with cross-ribbed vaults; pilasters on the side walls with pilasters and acanthus capitals; in the gable on the inner courtyard side a large leaded glass window designed by F. Nicolas from 1907. This gable of the chapel has a stepped gable.
The OLD CHAPEL dates from 1882: exterior with pointed-arch-shaped leaded glass windows with tracery in brick. Gabled roof with slate; roof lantern; small roof dormers.
The RECTOR'S RESIDENCE dates from 1889 and was built in the style of Dutch Neo-Renaissance. Front facade with door and windows with sandstone sills; ashlar courses. Interior with so-called bishop's room with stucco rosette and fireplace with marble mantelpiece; stairwell with authentic tile floor and wooden staircase with balusters.
CLOISTER WING SOUTH SIDE Exterior: high convent wall with saddle back; facades with cross windows; sandstone sills; roof dormers. In the gable apex pointed-arch-shaped spandrels. Entrance section renewed around 1990; interior is largely intact in structure. The running cloister with ceiling with cross vaults; in the walls on the inner courtyard leaded glass windows; authentic panelled doors.
CLOISTER WING WEST SIDE Exterior with renovation traces; two tower-shaped extensions. Interior virtually identical to south wing.
CLOISTER WING NORTH SIDE A large part of this wing has been internally converted to apartments: for this purpose the original layout was adapted; some partition walls were removed. The cloister walk does not continue in this section; however the cross vaults are still present. The structure of this wing is intact in its main lines.
Valuation The former convent Mariadal is of general importance because of the ensemble of the following values. The former convent Mariadal is of cultural-historical importance as an example of a convent for Dominican sisters and thus of importance for religious history. The architectural-historical values are determined by the ornate rich brick architecture, the architectural style, the involvement of architect Baeten and the quality of the exterior and parts of the interior. The Mariadal Convent was built at the time at a considerable distance from the city, thereby creating a more or less closed living community. This makes the location along Schoolweg of importance. The Mariadal Convent has been preserved in reasonably good condition and is rare in cultural-historical and typological terms. As an example of a Kulturkampf convent, Mariadal possesses religious-historical value.
