Inleiding
Hoofdpostkantoor gebouwd in 1938 naar een ontwerp van Rijksbouwmeester Hoekstra. De toegepaste bouwstijl is Traditionalisme met toepassing van historiserende elementen met name rond de hoofdingang. Aan de zijde van de Van Oppensingel werd in 1969 een forse aanbouw gerealiseerd waardoor het oorspronkelijk L-vormige gebouw een carrévorm kreeg.
Omschrijving
Postkantoor met een van oorsprong L-vormige plattegrond. Aan de zijde van de Keulse Poort is het volume met daarin thans het postkantoor gesitueerd. In het volume aan de Nassaustraat waren oorspronkelijk kantoren ondergebracht, thans bevinden zich hier telefooncentrales. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen en natuursteen. Rechthoekige vensters en deuren. Vensters deels met kleine roedeverdeling en stalen kozijnen. Een aantal vensterkozijnen is uitgevoerd in kunststof. De bouwvolumes worden afgedekt met schilddaken met Hollandse pannen. Gevel Keulse Poort: dit volume telt drie bouwlagen. Symmetrische indeling voorgevel. Middendeel vooruitspringend met hierin de hoofdingang. De hoofdentree is voorzien van een hellingbaan met leuning. Deze is uitgesloten van bescherming. De hoofdingang wordt geflankeerd door twee voorstellingen in witte natuursteen. Aan de rechterzijde van de ingang een voorstelling van de Gelderse Poort, Venlona en een krijger. Aan de linkerzijde van de ingang een afbeelding van de Roermondse Poort, een mijnwerker en een Limburgs landschap. Aan de bovenzijde van de hoofdentree is het Nederlandse Wapen in witte natuursteen aangebracht. Hierboven de vlaggenstok. De entree wordt geaccentueerd door een overstek in beton dat zich uitstrekt over de gehele gevelbreedte. De ingangspui is vernieuwd. Aan weerszijden van de entreepartij vier hoge vensters. De vensterdorpels zijn uitgevoerd in zwarte graniet. De vensters worden gedeeld door het beton overstek op de scheiding van de eerste en tweede bouwlaag. Aan de bovenzijde van het overstek in de tweede bouwlaag 20-ruits stalen vensters. Onder het overstek driedelige vensters met kunststof kozijnen. Het beton overstek wordt gedragen door kleine consoles in witte natuursteen met hierin het monogram van de PTT of een afbeelding van een posthoorn. In de derde bouwlaag rechthoekige vensters met kunststof kozijnen. Schilddak met overstek. In de kopgevel van de rechterzijgevel de voormalige entree voor de directeur. In de eerste bouwlaag aan de linkerzijde de voordeur met spionnetje en twee hardstenen treden. Rechts hiervan vier zesruits vensters met kunststof kozijnen. Deze vensters hebben geglazuurde dorpelstenen. Ook in deze gevel loopt het betonoverstek door. Doorlopend over de tweede en derde bouwlaag drie hoge smalle glas-in-lood vensters. Aan de benedenzijde van elk venster een gevelsteen in witte natuursteen met hierin afbeeldingen van Goltzius, Mercator en Puteanus.
Het volume met de directie-ingang is iets smaller dan het postkantoorvolume. In de eerste bouwlaag aan de rechterzijgevel een uitbouw in een bouwlaag met plat dak met in de zijgevel twee ronde venstertjes. In de tweede bouwlaag vier kleine rechthoekige ventilatieopeningen en in de derde bouwlaag vier kleine venstertjes. Rechts de aanbouw uit 1969. De linkerzijgevel van het postkantoorvolume is blind. Wel loopt het betonoverstek door naar het volume aan de Nassaustraat.
Gevel Nassaustraat. Dit volume telt vier bouwlagen. Linkerdeel voorgevel springt over een breedte van twee venstertraveeën vooruit. In de oksel van het vooruitspringend geveldeel en het lange rechtergeveldeel is de entree geplaatst. Entree in een portiek met zes natuursteen treden. In de eerste bouwlaag rechthoekige kunststof vensters. De rechthoekige keldervensters zijn voorzien van ijzeren traliewerk. Helemaal rechts in de eerste bouwlaag een viertal ronde vensters. In de tweede bouwlaag rechthoekige achtruits stalen vensters. In het vooruitspringend volume aan de linkerzijde in de tweede bouwlaag twee rechthoekige kunststof panelen. In de derde en vierde bouwlaag rechthoekige vensterkozijnen. Boven de entree in de derde en vierde bouwlaag een klein balkon met metalen balustrade en kunststof balkondeuren. In de linkerzijgevel van het volume Nassaustraat rechthoekige kunststof vensterkozijnen.
Achtergevel volume Keulse Poort: aan de linkerzijde het aangebouwde volume naar de Van Oppensingel uit 1968. De achtergevel van het oorspronkelijke volume aan de Keulse Poort telt drie bouwlagen. Aan de bovenzijde van de eerste bouwlaag een schuin oplopende betonnen luifel over de gehele breedte van de achtergevels van de Keulse Poort en Nassaustraat. Vensters en deuren eerste bouwlaag grotendeels vernieuwd. In de tweede bouwlaag twintigruits stalen vensterkozijnen. In de derde bouwlaag rechthoekige kunststof vensterkozijnen. In het dak een achttal kleine dakkapellen.
De achtergevel van het volume aan de Nassaustraat telt vier bouwlagen. In de eerste bouwlaag de doorlopende betonnen luifel. Vensters en deuren grotendeels vernieuwd. In de tweede bouwlaag het uitgebouwde volume van het bedrijfsrestaurant met plat dak en links een afgeschuinde hoek. Rechthoekige kunststof vensters. In de derde en vierde bouwlaag rechthoekige kunststof kozijnen. In de vierde bouwlaag een dubbele kunststof balkondeur. In het dak vier kleine dakkapellen. In de hoek rechts het hoog doorlopend rechthoekig torenvolume. Haaks aansluitend op het volume aan de Nassaustraat een kort volume met plat dak met hierin hoge trappenhuisvensters met stalen kozijnen. In het verlengde hiervan aansluitend het aangebouwde volume uit 1968.
De structuur van het interieur is grotendeels in tact. De uitmonstering is gemoderniseerd. Beschermenswaardig zijn het trappenhuis in het volume aan de Nassaustraat en het trappenhuis van de voormalige directeurswoning aan de van Oppensingel. De hal van de ingang aan de Nassaustraat heeft zwarte natuursteen vloertegels. De trap heeft eveneens treden in zwarte natuursteen. De borstwering van de trap is bekleed met zwarte natuursteen; roestvrijstalen ronde handlijst. In het trappenhuis in de derde bouwlaag een glazenwand met stalen vensterkozijnen met hierin drie ranke ronde kolommen bekleed met geel geglazuurde tegeltjes. In de vierde bouwlaag eveneens drie ranke ronde kolommen met geel geglazuurde tegeltjes. Tussen deze kolommen smeedijzeren hekjes met een sobere versiering. In de buitenwand naar de binnenplaats een hoog driedelig glas-in-lood raam. Vanaf de vierde bouwlaag een smalle trap met zwarte natuursteen treden naar de zolderverdieping. In de hal van directie-ingang aan de Van Oppensingel een trappenhuis met traptreden in gele travertin; in het trappenhuis drie hoge glas-in-lood ramen met geel glas; op de tweede verdieping in het trappenhuis een klein bordes. De zolders hebben de authentieke houten spantenconstructie.
Waardering
Het hoofdpostkantoor van Venlo bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling binnen de architectuur van postkantoren. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door het belang van het pand voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur; de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van Rijksbouwmeester Hoekstra. Het gebouw bezit ensemblewaarden door de markante en beeldbepalende situering aan de Keulse Poort. Het pand is tenslotte van algemeen belang vanwege de architectonische gaafheid van het ex- en een deel van het interieur en de architectuurhistorische en typologische zeldzaamheid.

In the staircase in the third storey a glass wall with steel window frames containing three slender round columns clad with yellow glazed tiles. On the fourth storey likewise three slender round columns with yellow glazed tiles. Between these columns wrought-iron railings with simple decoration. In the outer wall towards the courtyard a tall three-part leaded-glass window. From the fourth storey a narrow staircase with black natural stone steps to the attic floor. In the hall of the director's entrance on the Van Oppensingel a staircase with steps in yellow travertine; in the staircase three tall leaded-glass windows with yellow glass; on the second floor in the staircase a small landing. The attics have the authentic wooden roof truss structure.
Valuation
The head post office of Venlo possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a typological development within the architecture of post offices. The architectural-historical values are determined by the importance of the building for supra-regional architectural history; the aesthetic qualities of the design and as an example of the oeuvre of State Architect Hoekstra. The building possesses ensemble values through its striking and characteristic location at the Keulse Poort.
