Inleiding

Introduction

Former school building with two dwellings on a rectangular footprint in longitudinal direction behind a recessed building line on Julianastraat in Venlo; a low brick fence with piers and ironwork forms the property boundary. The school building displays businesslike expressionist influences through the plastic use of cubic building volumes and vertical elements, with some reminiscences of De Stijl. The building was constructed in 1930 to a design by architect J.L. Grubben by contractors Gebroeders van der Borst from Beesel, on behalf of the 'Deutscher Schulverein'. This was an association of the German community in Venlo, which had been committed since 1910 to education of their children in their own language and culture. In 1912 they had the use of some temporary classrooms ("Kaiserin Auguste Victoriaschule"), but this proved inadequate due to the steady growth of the German community, especially after the arrival of the giant Nedinsco in Venlo. With financial assistance from this company, the association was able to acquire a plot of land on Julianastraat and the school was built in 1930. The end of the Second World War also brought an end to the existence of the German school in Venlo. The building was renovated in 1959 and again in 1991. During these renovations, there were substantial interventions particularly in the former headmaster's residence (left block volume, formerly no. 3) and caretaker's residence (third storey of central volume and part of right block volume, no 5a). Various openings were made to achieve good internal connections and to make the building suitable as an office. In 1991 the original main entrance was also relocated from the right part of the recessed central volume to the left part. A small extension was built in front of the former main entrance.

Description

Three-storey building with two (higher) corner volumes under a flat roof with ceramic tiles. The entire building has a facade of red brick with masonry in half-brick bond. Various rectangular windows with wooden frames, the windows in the central volume fitted with leaded glass; horizontal windows extending across the corners in the left block volume.

The facade divisions are as follows. The front facade is horizontally divided by two projecting cubic corner volumes with tall square chimneys and between them a recessed central volume. The LEFT CUBIC CORNER VOLUME, the former headmaster's residence, consists of three storeys with projecting corner elements in cubic building volumes of various sizes. On the first storey there is a horizontal window divided by only one glazing bar. Directly to the right of this window the facade recedes slightly and a small rectangular window begins, which extends across the corner of the facade to the right side of this left block volume. On the second and third storeys this pattern repeats, only the entire facade recedes slightly relative to the square chimney which is at the far left of the left block volume. The chimney is partly open-worked and provided with stone decorative tops. Directly to the right of the left corner volume is a small extension that originally formed the entrance to the headmaster's residence (no. 3, from 1991 also no. 5); this has meanwhile also become the main entrance to the entire building after the school's main entrance was closed. The CENTRAL VOLUME is three storeys, with the aforesaid extension with main entrance on the left in the corner against the left cubic corner volume, which is reached via a small brick staircase. To the right of the extension are two rectangular three-pane windows; further on are four more of these windows in a row. To the right of these is the 1991 extension. In the plane of the second storey are ten rectangular two-pane windows, grouped in pairs and once in a group of four. Finally, on the third storey at regular intervals are five square windows with glazing bars. Between the central volume and the property boundary of low brick piers with cast-iron fencing is a small garden.

The RIGHT CUBIC CORNER VOLUME is two storeys and also has projecting corner elements in cubic building volumes of various sizes. On the left side of this volume is the aforementioned extension. Above it, in the plane of the first floor, are four rectangular leaded-glass windows, separated from each other by brick mullions. The right side of the front of this volume - with the square chimney - projects slightly relative to the left part. In the plane of the first storey, just where the facade begins to project, is a window with glazing bars extending across the corner. At the far right a narrow rectangular window. On the second storey, in the corner of the recessed facade section, is a square window with glazing bars. At the far right the square chimney which is partly open-worked and provided with stone decorative tops; this is lower than the left chimney. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE projects slightly on the right. In the plane of the first storey on the left is the door to the former caretaker's residence which was located largely on the third storey of the central volume. To the right of the door a rectangular window, and to the right of that a side door with two leaves. To the right of that the facade projects across its entire width. In the plane of the second storey in the non-projecting section is a square window with glazing bars. On the former tiled playground at the rear of the school is an open-worked single-storey TOILET BUILDING under a flat roof on a stone basement in a facade of red brick in half-brick bond. On the left the roof is supported by a wooden column. Under the roof are two enclosed toilets on the right. The INTERIOR follows in its design and detailing more closely the Amsterdam School and Traditionalism, and reflects the character of a school building. The central spaces in the central volume of the school, around which classrooms and other service rooms are grouped both on the ground floor and on the first floor, are fitted with wainscoting of ochre-yellow and black tiles. The floors of both spaces are fitted with small white tiles, with the edges fitted with colourful accents in red and black tiles, and with a stylized cross constructed in the middle also of red and black tiles. These tile floors are also present in the toilets and the former kitchen. In the walls of the aforesaid central spaces various niches in Amsterdam School forms have been incorporated, in which various things such as fountains and coat racks are housed. The panel doors to the classrooms are original and fitted with a window of six panes in the upper panel. Also the stairwell in the right part of the building is fitted with wainscoting of the aforementioned ochre-yellow and black tiles, in a geometric and Amsterdam School-like pattern. The six classrooms are still easily recognizable by their unchanged volume, some even still with original washbasin/sink.
