Omschrijving
Inleiding Blok van twee dienstwoningen, aanvankelijk gebouwd als dienstwoning annex kantoor als onderdeel van het waterleidingcomplex. De woningen staan op een rechthoekig grondvlak in lengterichting achter de rooilijn aan de Zwarteweg te Venlo. Daarbij staan de woningen haaks op het even ten zuiden ervan gelegen pompgebouw; het gehele complex ligt direct aan de voet van de steilrand. De dienstwoningen zijn in 1888-1889 in 19e eeuwse traditionele stijl gebouwd en ontworpen door de architecten J. Jonkergouw en F. Keuller, overigens met duidelijke invloeden van de Chaletstijl. Naast de topgevel waren aanvankelijk ook de linker en rechterzijgevel voorzien van Chaletornamentiek; deze zijn echter rond de Tweede Wereldoorlog verwijderd vanwege vochtproblemen. Na de sluiting van het waterleidingcomplex bleef de woonfunctie van de woningen behouden. In 1966 werden de woningen uitgebreid gerenoveerd. Het linkerdeel, pand Zwarteweg 8, leed in 1975 behoorlijke bliksem en brandschade, maar werd volledig hersteld. In de jaren '90 van de 20e eeuw werden de dienstwoningen fors van binnen verbouwd.
Omschrijving
Eenlaagse dienstwoningen met topgevel en kapverdieping in lengterichting onder zadeldak met overstek en mastgoot, gedekt met kruispannen. Het gebouw heeft een hoge bakstenen plint met een opstand van rode machinale baksteen met metselwerk in kruisverband. De indeling was nagenoeg symmetrisch met links een dienstwoning en rechts het beoogde kantoor, vrijwel direct ook dienstwoning. De symmetrie is ook duidelijk zichtbaar in het exterieur van het pand. Het middendeel van de frontgevel is vooruitspringend en gaat over in een topgevel met houten dakoverstek en Chaletornamentiek; in deze ornamentiek is hetzelfde trapmotief verwerkt, als in de voorgevel van het pompstation. Rechthoekige houten vensters en kozijnen; oude Duitse schuiframen uit 1880 met T-venster-roedenverdeling, waarvan een enkele nog met het originele glas. De deuren (allen vernieuwd) zijn voorzien van bovenlicht. Hardstenen dorpels en lateien. Boven de lateien bakstenen segmentbogen, waarvan de velden zijn gevuld met siermetselwerk. De indeling van de VOORGEVEL is als volgt. Links een dubbel venster, vervolgens de voordeur van Zwarteweg 8. De topgevel, met twee vensters, behoord geheel tot Zwarteweg 6. Tussen genoemde vensters de originele hardstenen brievenbus ten behoeve van het kantoor, met de aanduiding: "brieven". In de segmentbogen van genoemde topgevelvensters een hardstenen sluitsteen, welke een gevelsteen dragen met de tekst: "waterleiding". Boven deze gevelsteen in de topgevel nog een klein venster. Rechts van de topgevel de voordeur van nr. 6 met een dubbel venster. In de RECHTERZIJGEVEL links en rechts een venster, op de verdieping idem, maar dan gecentreerd. Op de daklijst zijn de aanhechtingspunten van de verwijderde Chaletconstructies nog zichtbaar. De ACHTERGEVEL vertoont links (Zwarteweg 6) een deur met venster en rechts daarvan een WC-raampje. Vervolgens een venster met deur (Zwarteweg 8), gevolgd door een klein WC-raampje, en opnieuw een venster met deur. De LINKERZIJGEVEL vertoont dezelfde opbouw als de rechterzijgevel. Beide woningen bezitten geen INTERIEUR waarden meer, met uitzondering van het balkenplafond in het voormalige kantoorvertrek van pand Zwarteweg 6. Bovendien werd midden jaren '90 van de 20e eeuw de indeling van beide woningen veranderd door het naar voren halen van de trap waardoor de karakteristieke doorlopende gang verdween. Ook werden enkele ruimten doorgebroken.
Waardering
De dienstwoningen zijn van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de groei van de zorg voor de levering van schoon drinkwater en tevens als voorbeeld van de technische en typologische ontwikkeling van de gebouwen voor de drinkwatervoorziening. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur en de bouwtechniek. Het object heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de bijzondere en functionele situering nabij de steilrand en de nog andere aanwezige relicten van het waterleidingcomplex. Introduction Block of two service dwellings, originally built as service dwelling and office as part of the water supply complex. The building has a high brick plinth with a facing of red machine-made brick with masonry in stretcher bond. The layout was almost symmetrical with on the left a service dwelling and on the right the intended office, almost immediately also a service dwelling. The symmetry is also clearly visible in the exterior of the premises. The middle section of the front facade projects forward and continues into a gable roof with wooden roof overhang and Chalet ornamentation; in this ornamentation the same step motif is incorporated as in the front facade of the pump station. Rectangular wooden windows and frames; old German sash windows from 1880 with T-window glazing bars, some of which still have the original glass. The doors (all renewed) are provided with fanlights. Hard stone sills and lintels. Above the lintels brick segmental arches, the fields of which are filled with decorative masonry. The layout of the FRONT FACADE is as follows. On the left a double window, then the front door of Zwarteweg 8. The gable roof, with two windows, belongs entirely to Zwarteweg 6. Between the said windows the original hard stone letterbox for the office, with the inscription: "brieven". In the segmental arches of the said gable roof windows a hard stone keystone, which bears a facade stone with the text: "waterleiding". Above this facade stone in the gable roof still a small window. To the right of the gable roof the front door of No. 6 with a double window. In the RIGHT SIDE FACADE on the left and right a window, on the upper storey the same, but then centred. On the roof line the attachment points of the removed Chalet structures are still visible. The REAR FACADE shows on the left (Zwarteweg 6) a door with window and to the right of it a WC window. Then a window with door (Zwarteweg 8), followed by a small WC window, and again a window with door. The LEFT SIDE FACADE shows the same structure as the right side facade.
Both dwellings have no INTERIOR values remaining, with the exception of the beam ceiling in the former office room of premises Zwarteweg 6. Moreover, in the mid-1990s the layout of both dwellings was changed by moving the staircase forward, whereby the characteristic through passage disappeared. Several rooms were also opened up.
Valuation
The service dwellings are of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the growth of care for the supply of clean drinking water and also as an example of the technical and typological development of buildings for drinking water supply. It has architectural-historical importance for the history of architecture and building techniques. The object has ensemble values because of the special and functional positioning near the steep escarpment and the other remaining relics of the water supply complex. The service dwellings are important because of their architectural-historical and typological rarity and have been preserved in fairly good condition.
