Inleiding
Waterleidingpompstation als onderdeel van waterleidingcomplex op rechthoekig grondvlak in dwarsrichting achter rooilijn aan de Zwarteweg te Venlo. Het complex ligt direct aan de voet van de steilrand, iets ten noordoosten van het pompgebouw liggen ook de twee dienstwoningen van het voormalige waterleidingcomplex, eveneens aan de voet van de steilrand. Het pompstation is gebouwd in 19de eeuwse traditionele stijl, met reminicenties aan de Neogotiek en de Neorenaissance.
Reeds in 1927 werden de stoommachines verwijderd en in 1930 werd de bijbehorende schoorsteen afgebroken. Na de ingebruikname van het nieuwe waterleidingstation op de Grote Heide in 1955 raakte het complex in onbruik. Vanaf 1962 wordt het pompstation verhuurd. Ten behoeve van de (huidige) verenigingsfunctie zijn aan de zuidgevel ruimtes toegevoegd en zijn aan de westkant intern een aantal ruimtes toegevoegd op de begane grond en op de verdieping.
Omschrijving
Eenlaags pompgebouw in dwarsrichting onder zadeldak gedekt met kruispannen. Het pompgebouw was een grote hal van 12 bij 22 meter. Het heeft een bakstenen plint met een opstand van rode machinale baksteen met metselwerk in kruisverband. Geprofileerd decoratief metselwerk onder de dakrand. De voor- en achtergevel zijn de meest in het oog springende delen van het gebouw vanwege de uitkragende en geprofileerd aangezette trapgevels, welke in beide geveldelen rusten op twee kleine hoekpilasters met hardstenen kapitelen. De trapgevels hebben een hardstenen afdekking en kennen in de top twee doorgeschoten pilasters welke een hardstenen boldecoratie dragen. Alle gevelwanden waren voorzien van een segmentbogenstructuur met hardstenen sluitstenen en aanzetstenen. Daaronder een gebogen strek in verdiepte gevelvlakken. De segmentbogen lopen uit in kolommen. In de verdiepte gevelvlakken zijn veel gevelopeningen dichtgemaakt en/of juist geopend. In de voorgevel vermeldt een gevelsteen de opdrachtgever en de aannemer: "Waterleiding; geopend den 4 februari 1889 door den burgermeester van Venloo, Ch. Houben. Gebouwd voor de Waterleiding Exploitatiemaatschappij te Rotterdam, door de firma van Wijk & Hoogendijk en Ir. Keuller". Boven deze gevelsteen bevindt zich nog een rond venster met hardstenen sluitsteen.
Waardering
Het waterleidingpompgebouw is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de groei van de zorg voor de levering van schoon drinkwater en tevens als voorbeeld van de technische en typologische ontwikkeling van de gebouwen voor de drinkwatervoorziening. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur en de bouwtechniek. Het object heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de bijzondere en functionele situering nabij de steilrand en de nog andere aanwezige relicten van het waterleidingcomplex. Introduction
Water supply pumping station as part of a water supply complex on a rectangular ground plan in transverse direction behind the building line on the Zwarteweg in Venlo. The complex is situated directly at the foot of the escarpment, slightly to the northeast of the pump building are also the two service dwellings of the former water supply complex, likewise at the foot of the escarpment. The pumping station was built in 19th century traditional style, with reminiscences of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance.
Already in 1927 the steam engines were removed and in 1930 the associated chimney was demolished. After the new water supply station on the Grote Heide was put into service in 1955 the complex fell into disuse. From 1962 the pumping station was rented out. Description
Single-storey pump building in transverse direction under a gabled roof covered with crossed tiles. The pump building was a large hall of 12 by 22 metres. It has a brick plinth with a facing of red machine-made brick with masonry in Flemish bond. Profiled decorative masonry under the eaves. The front and rear facades are the most striking parts of the building due to the overhanging and profiled stepped gables, which in both facade sections rest on two small corner pilasters with stone capitals. The stepped gables have a stone coping and feature in the top two projecting pilasters which carry stone ball decoration. All facade surfaces were provided with a segmental arch structure with stone voussoirs and springer stones. Beneath this a curved course in recessed facade planes. The segmental arches terminate in columns. In the recessed facade planes many facade openings have been closed and/or newly opened. In the front facade a facade stone records the client and the contractor: "Water supply; opened on 4 February 1889 by the mayor of Venloo, Ch. Houben. Built for the Water Supply Operating Company in Rotterdam, by the firm van Wijk & Hoogendijk and Ir. Keuller". Above this facade stone there is also a round window with a stone voussoir.

The water supply pumping building is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of the growth of care for the provision of clean drinking water and also as an example of the technical and typological development of buildings for drinking water supply. It has architectural-historical importance for the history of architecture and building techniques.
