Waardering

Introduction

The building of the Medical Service, building W, originally had the function of a hospital for the care of sick soldiers. At present, part of the building is still in use for medical care and another part is used by the Royal Marechaussee. The building is situated in the north-west corner of the barracks grounds. The architectural style applied is Traditionalism.

Description

The building has an elongated polygonal floor plan, comprises partly two storeys and is covered with half-hipped roofs with Dutch tiles and flat roofs. Rectangular windows with fanlights, partly with small glazing bars. Rectangular wooden doors. Hardstone sills and lintels. The building material applied is brick and hardstone. The building has an almost symmetrically arranged front facade. The main building comprises two storeys plus attic storey and is covered with a half-hipped roof. The central section of the front facade projects forward and terminates in a gabled roof under a half-hipped eave. This projecting central section has in the first storey a portico with a rounded arch access in hardstone. At the top of the arch the coat of arms of the Royal Marechaussee. In the portico an entrance frame from approximately 1970 with a double door and side and fanlights with glazing bars. On either side of the portico a rectangular window with fanlight with glazing bars. In the second storey four rectangular windows and in the gabled roof two rectangular windows of smaller format. In the front facade of the recessed building section on either side of the central section in the first and second storey three rectangular windows. On both roof slopes a roof dormer with a gabled roof and wooden spire. On either side of the tall central section projections in a single storey with flat roof. In these projections rectangular windows with fanlights with small glazing bars. In the gable of the single-storey projections a rectangular double door with fanlight with small glazing bars. On either side of these doors two small window panes. At the end of the projections on both sides of the main building a former dwelling in a single storey with a half-hipped roof. The former dwellings count in the long facades seven windows with fanlights with small glazing bars. The former dwelling on the right side is provided on the south facade with a bay with flat roof, double terrace doors and windows with fanlights with small glazing bars. The rear facade, courtyard side, of the main building is provided with a right-angled projection in a single storey with flat roof. Halfway through this projection a tall through-running square chimney duct. In this projection rectangular windows and doors with fanlights. In the rear facade of the main building in the first storey rectangular windows and doors. In the second storey rectangular windows of different format, partly two or three at a time under continuous lintel. In the rear facade of the single-storey projection on the left side of the main building rectangular window frames from approximately 1970. The main structure of the interior is largely intact; some rounded arches on simple pilasters; authentic stairwell in the main building with wrought-iron railings and wooden handrails. Interior fittings from approximately 1970 largely modernised.

Valuation

The former hospital building of the Frederik Hendrik barracks possesses, as part of the barracks complex, cultural-historical value by virtue of its importance for the military history of the Netherlands. The architectural-historical values are determined by the importance of the building for the typological development within the architecture of military-utilitarian buildings. The building possesses ensemble values as part of the barracks complex and by virtue of its distinctive and characterising situation in this part of Venlo. The building is finally of general importance by virtue of the cultural-historical and architectural-historical rarity and the integrity of the exterior and part of the interior.
