Inleiding
PLANTSOENAANLEG, uitgevoerd op het druppelvormige Wilhelminaplein in ca. 1915 naar ontwerp van architect Johs. Mutters in Decoratieve tuinstijl met een monument ter ere van H.M. Regentes Emma uit 1937.
Het Wilhelminaplein ligt centraal in het villapark De Kieviet, dat door dezelfde architect van 1911-1914 in opdracht van de Exploitatiemaatschappij N.V. De Kieviet en Wildrust op de plaats van de voormalige buitenplaats Groot Haesebroek, ontworpen werd. Dit villapark kenmerkt zich door het gebogen stratenpatroon en ruime groenstroken. Op het plein komen meerdere straten uit, waaronder de Nassaulaan. Aan het driehoekige gazon van deze laan, dat direct aansluit op het plein, ligt een kerk uit 1923-1924, die eveneens naar ontwerp van architect Johs. Mutters is gebouwd.
Omschrijving
Symmetrisch uitgevoerde plantsoenaanleg met een rosarium met gazons, pergola's met klimplanten, vaste plantenborders met magnolia's, coniferen en gesnoeide taxussen en grintpaden. In het midden van het plantsoen bevindt zich een rond terras, dat aan de zuidoostzijde bereikbaar is via gemetselde trappen met bakstenen muurtjes met hardstenen dekplaten. Aan weerszijden van de muurtjes, op het terras, bevindt zich een bakstenen pijler met hardstenen dekplaat. In het midden van een cirkelvormige border staat het kalkstenen monument op vierkante plattegrond met op de vlakken van de hoge sokkel reliëfs en teksten en op de sokkel een geknielde schilddragende jongen met het wapen van Wassenaar. De teksten luiden: "Emma/prinses van/Waldeck Pyrmont/gehuwd met koning/Willem III in 1879/regentes van het/koninkrijk/1890-1898" (waarboven een reliëf met kroon), "Emma/2 augustus 1858/20 maart 1934" (met daarboven een ovaal reliëf met een portret van H.M. Regentes Emma), "Opgericht door/de inwoners van/Wassenaar/onthuld 19 juni/1937" (met wapenschild Wassenaar) en "Zij was een ware moeder voor haar volk". Aan de noordoost en zuidwestzijde van het monument bevinden zich twee gemetselde banken met natuurstenen dekplaten.

In the centre of a circular border stands the limestone monument on a square footprint with reliefs and inscriptions on the faces of the high plinth and on the plinth a kneeling shield-bearing boy with the arms of Wassenaar. The inscriptions read: "Emma/princess of/Waldeck Pyrmont/married to King/Willem III in 1879/regent of the/kingdom/1890-1898" (above which a relief with crown), "Emma/2 August 1858/20 March 1934" (with above it an oval relief with a portrait of H.M. Regent Emma), "Erected by/the inhabitants of/Wassenaar/unveiled 19 June/1937" (with coat of arms Wassenaar) and "She was a true mother to her people". On the north-east and south-west sides of the monument are two brick benches with natural stone coping.
