Introduction complex component 2

HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT in Mixed Garden Style belonging to the historical country estate Voorlinden. Around 1913 the landscape park layout by Zocher sr. and jr. from the period 1803-1835 was reorganised into a landscape park befitting the new English manor house and the ancillary buildings. Architect R.J. Johnston designed in 1912 the straight-line garden layout as an extension of the architecture of the house. The regular layout in Neo-Architectural Style, inspired by garden forms from the Italian Renaissance and French Baroque, forms the transition to the landscape park section.

On a detailed map of the estates Voorlinden and Blanckenburgh from 1843, when the estates were in single ownership, the layout by the Zochers is clearly recognisable; a wooded landscape park layout with meandering walking paths along open spaces with ornamental elements. In front of the house a large water feature with various lobular extensions and in the central axis a broad sight line towards the woods on Blanckenburgh. On either side of the house the nursery, kitchen garden and orchard. The formal avenue structure in the woods along the dune edge forms the connection between the two country estates.

Description

Of the 19th-century landscape park layout by J.D. Zocher sr. and jr. the woods along the western and northern edge of the park remain. In the dune woodland on the western side a high dune ridge as a transition to the adjoining dune area, a straight ditch and remains of a straight avenue structure with diagonals between Voorlinden and Blanckenburgh. In the woods conifers alternating with deciduous trees (including maples, beeches and chestnuts). In the dense woodland edge on the north side a raised area which forms as it were a terrace with a view onto the adjacent Blanckenburg.

From the gate piers at the Buurtweg the (asphalt) drive runs in a westerly direction towards the house and passes on the left the old kitchen garden (now nursery), several (former) service dwellings and the old orchard. The avenue continues its course along the rear of the manor house (west façade) in a northerly direction and ends at the coach house and the coachman's dwelling. The avenue planting consists at the beginning of beeches and subsequently shrub groups (including holly and yew), alternating with among others chestnuts (particularly in the vicinity of the service dwellings), oaks, beeches, limes and maples. On the south side of the manor house fairly dense tree groups (including oaks and beeches) and one striking solitary red beech. Behind the house (west) among others several large chestnuts and in the paddock on the north side small tree groups of limes and chestnuts.

During the reorganisation around 1913 the water feature acquired its present meandering form, befitting the location and orientation of the new house. In front of the house a broad sight line lined by trees and shrubs onto the meandering water feature. The sinuous form of the waterway is accentuated by small tree and shrub groups (including yew, alder, chestnut, willow) which provide various sight lines onto the open meadow and the Buurtweg.

From the drive three paths lead to the rotunda with small pergola in front of the main entrance in the south façade of the manor house. This is a component of the straight-line garden layout by Johnston which continues in front of the house. The symmetrically arranged slightly raised garden layout adjoins the terrace in front of the east façade and is separated from the lawn by a low brick wall. The passages in this wall are accentuated by semi-circular brick piers with ornamental vases. On the north and south side pergolas with red brick columns and wooden beams. The middle part of the garden consists of a rectangular lawn, flanked by two paths paved with flagstones. On either side of the lawn two square sections with circular lawns and in the spandrels flower beds, enclosed by clipped box hedges. Centrally in the lawns a four-part figure with garden ornament on plinth. In the northern lawn young oak trees are planted.

Valuation

The historical park and garden layout of the country estate Voorlinden, created in stages, is of general importance because of its cultural and garden-historical value as a representative example of a combination of 19th-century park elements in English Landscape Style and early 20th-century park elements in Neo-Architectural Garden Style, whereby romantic and geometric patterns are merged.

The layout has ensemble value because of the visual and spatial coherence with the other complex components and in particular with the manor house.
