Bij het landhuis Meyland behorende geometrisch TUINAANLEG in de Nieuwe Architectonische stijl van D.F. Tersteeg stamt uit omstreeks 1920. De inmiddels vernieuwde tennisbaan met bijbehorend tennishuisje ten noordoosten van het huis maakt deel uit van de tuinaanleg evenals de MUUR, de boomgaard en broeibakken. De parkaanleg in landschapsstijl maakt oorspronkelijk deel uit van de buitenplaats Backershagen, waarvan het park door tuinarchitect C.E.A. Petzold werd aangelegd.
Omschrijving
Rechthoekige strak geometrische tuinaanleg achter het huis, opgebouwd in drie niveaus. In de middenas van het huis een recht grindpad en in het verlengde daarvan een vierkante vijver die overgaat in een kanaal. Voor de achtergevel een gemetseld terras, belegd met flagstones, gemetselde borstwering en in de middenas een gemetselde trap naar het grindpad. Het grindpad doorkruist in het gazon voor het terras een dwarsas en eindigt bij een tweede gemetselde trap onder een doorgang in een manshoge geschoren haag. De haag ligt in een u-vorm rond de vierkante vijver met betonnen bassin en flagstones. De trap in de haag wordt geflankeerd door siervazen op gemetselde sokkels. Vanaf de vijver in de middenas een recht kanaal dat eindigt bij een dwarskanaal met bruggetje. Aan weerszijden van het kanaal symmetrisch geplaatste heesters in het gazon dat aan de buitenzijde wordt omzoomd door boomgroepen. In een deel van de tuin restanten van een boomgaard en broeibakken. Bij de tennisbaan een tuinmuur met poortje onder rondboog. In de tuin staat een kunststenen tuinvaas gevormd door een putto die een schaal draagt. De parkaanleg in landschapsstijl functioneert als een coulis.
Waardering
De tuinaanleg uit circa 1920 bij het landhuis Meyland is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en tuinhistorische waarde als gaaf en representatief voorbeeld van de Nieuwe Architectonische Tuinstijl, kenmerkend voor het oeuvre van de tuinarchitect D.F. Tersteeg.
De aanleg is goed herkenbaar in hoofdstructuur gaaf en deels ook wat betreft de beplanting en de bouwkundige onderdelen.
De aanleg heeft een hoge ensemblewaarde vanwege de historische ruimtelijke en visuele relatie als architectonische voortzetting van het huis. Verder van belang vanwege de samenhang tussen de tuin- en parkaanleg waarbij het oudere landschapspark van tuinarchitect Petzold, oorspronkelijk deel uitmakend van Backershagen, als een coulis functioneert.

Geometric GARDEN LAYOUT belonging to the country house Meyland in the New Architectural style by D.F. Tersteeg dates from around 1920. The now renovated tennis court with accompanying tennis lodge to the northeast of the house forms part of the garden layout as does the WALL, the orchard and hotbeds. The landscape-style park layout originally formed part of the country estate Backershagen, whose park was laid out by garden architect C.E.A. Petzold.
Description
Rectangular strictly geometric garden layout behind the house, constructed in three levels. Along the central axis of the house a straight gravel path and continuing from it a square pond that opens into a canal. Before the rear facade a mortared terrace, paved with flagstones, mortared parapet wall and along the central axis a mortared staircase to the gravel path. The gravel path crosses a transverse axis in the lawn in front of the terrace and ends at a second mortared staircase under a passage in a man-high clipped hedge. The hedge lies in a u-shape around the square pond with concrete basin and flagstones. The staircase in the hedge is flanked by ornamental vases on mortared plinths. From the pond along the central axis a straight canal ending in a transverse canal with a small bridge. On either side of the canal symmetrically placed shrubs in the lawn which on the outside is edged by tree groups. In one part of the garden remains of an orchard and hotbeds. By the tennis court a garden wall with gateway under a round arch. In the garden stands a stone garden vase formed by a putto carrying a basin. The landscape-style park layout functions as a coulisse.
Valuation
The garden layout from circa 1920 at the country house Meyland is of general importance because of its cultural and garden historical value as an intact and representative example of the New Architectural Garden style, characteristic of the oeuvre of garden architect D.F. Tersteeg.
The layout is clearly recognisable and intact in main structure and partly also as regards planting and structural components.
The layout has high ensemble value because of the historical spatial and visual relationship as architectural continuation of the house. Further important because of the coherence between the garden and park layout whereby the older landscape park by garden architect Petzold, originally part of Backershagen, functions as a coulisse.
