Omschrijving
Inleiding complexonderdeel 1

Description
Introduction component part 1
The ESTABLISHMENT of the Jewish cemetery of the New Hochdeutsch congregation was realised from 1906 onwards. The entrance is situated at the Kerkehout. Characteristic of Hochdeutsch traditions is the use of exclusively upright gravestones, which have as much as possible the same length and width. Moreover, most stones have a comparable layout, which is in line with the Jewish faith that rich and poor are equal in death. This has led to a relatively uniform appearance of all stones oriented to the east. There is also no distinction in classes, with the exception of the kohanim (priests), who mostly lie in the first row. They are predominantly freestanding stones. Some gravestones, those of couples, are linked via a segmental arch. Beside Hebrew texts, common death symbols appear on the gravestones, but also specifically Jewish ones. Characteristic of the relatively rectilinear layout is the planting, the use of cypress.
Description
The cemetery has a relatively simple rectilinear layout on a large rectangular plot surrounded by an early 20th-century concrete wall. The entrance is situated on the long west side opposite the sexton's house. The gravel paths have the central path cut through halfway by a transverse path. A gravel path also runs around the perimeter of the plot, partly bordered by a low-trimmed hedge.
The central path is, like the northern part of the long transverse path, flanked by cypresses. The remaining planting concentrates mainly along the edges of the plot and consists mainly of coniferous trees. On the west side, along the access road, the oak trees are probably a remnant of the original dune forest. The burial area has a predominantly open character with long rows of upright gravestones, grouped in parallel rows. The hardstone upright gravestones, oriented to the east, are predominantly circa 1.75-2.00m high and have a semicircular termination with inward and outward curves. A small part is linked via a segmental arch. For a number of graves there is a rectangular boundary, sometimes provided with fence posts, intended to be coupled to each other by iron chains.
The stones are not richly decorated with Hebrew texts, names and dates of the deceased. In addition, both common death symbols and also more specifically Jewish symbols appear on the stones, including double hands. There are also smaller gravestones, approximately 0.50m high with a star-shaped termination.
Valuation
The Jewish cemetery of the New Hochdeutsch congregation is of general importance because of its cultural- and architectural-historical value:
- as a rare and characteristic example of a relatively large Jewish cemetery from the early 20th century with a linear layout with associated planting.
- by the typology, as a special expression of a cultural and spiritual development.
- by the special ornamentation of the individual gravestones which partly have a symbolic character and contain references, amongst others, to the period of the Old Testament and functions which the deceased fulfilled within the Jewish community
Further of importance because of ensemble value through spatial and functional coherence with the associated sexton's house. The quantity and relative uniformity of the graves strengthen the ensemble value.
The cemetery is relatively intact in layout and planting as well as the associated gravestones. The gravestones are for the most part relatively intact with regard to principal form, material use and detailing. Due to the detailing there is also functional recognisability.
Such relatively large cemeteries with relatively uniform character, which were mainly established in the first half of the 20th century, are not common in our country and therefore have a certain rarity value.
