Inleiding complexonderdeel 4
Mogelijk was J.G.
- als onderdeel van een waardevolle en omvangrijke landgoederenzone aan weerszijden van de Rijksstraatweg;

Description
Introduction complex component 4
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate 'Ivicke' consists of a landscape park and a formal garden. The park in Early Landscape style from circa 1775-1780 with later modifications circa 1854 in Late Landscape style, acquired its present form and boundaries in 1912 through the division of the former country estate Backershagen. As part of the country estate Backershagen, it was together with the land of the Wiltzangk and Hartenkamp transformed circa 1775-1780 into a picturesque English landscape park with deer park, finch aviary, a section with irregular water features, artificial sand ridges, a moss hill, hermitage and a tea pavilion on an elevation. It is possible that J.G. Michael, father-in-law of J.D. Zocher sr., was responsible for the layout. After Backershagen came into the possession of Prince Frederik in 1846, the German landscape architect C.E.A. Petzold laid out among other things a 'Umfahrungsweg' along the various estates of the prince. This road, which created a unity between the different estates, ran with a bend over Ivicke and passed alongside a farmhouse located there, now disappeared. This road was cut through at the division of Backershagen in 1912 by the present Rust en Vreugdlaan, which is now the north-eastern boundary of Ivicke. Around 1913-1914 a formal garden was laid out for the present country house, in keeping with the then current Mixed garden style, which has a fairly enclosed character and is still clearly recognizable in its main form.
The swimming pool to the south-west of the house was created around 1960.
The pond behind the former coach house (Rust en Vreugdlaan 7) and the very high sand ridge on the north-west side of this pond were created in 1991 and do not belong to the historic, early-landscape park layout; the same applies to the layout of the front garden.
Description
Relatively enclosed early landscape park layout, originally the south-western boundary of Backershagen, as evidenced by the boundary in the form of (navigable) ditches and artificial sand ridges along the Rijksstraatweg and the Menkenlaan. The various groups of trees on and along the sand ridges consist predominantly of oak and beech trees, including some very old specimens. In addition, among others various rhododendrons, yew and holly trees. Around a spacious meadow within the undulating terrain with artificial sand ridges along the east, south and west sides a double sand ridge is recognizable, partly flanked by monumental deciduous trees, with an unpaved footpath between them. This is part of the original late-18th-century layout and appears among other things on a topographic map from 1888. On the large open inner space, which on the cadastral plan of 1822 is described as arable land, stands a monumental red beech (fagus) as a solitary tree. Along the edges are also various other monumental deciduous trees, including an oak tree and a weeping beech. The open space is closed to the north-east by deciduous trees that stand at regular intervals from one another. These form the north-eastern boundary of a path, on the other side bounded by a sand ridge. This path, which is part of the so-called 'Umfahrungsweg' along the estates of Prince Frederik, connected on the west side to the still existing path at the service dwelling of Eikenhorst and east side towards Backershagen. In the bend of this path lies, bounded by a double sand ridge, to the north-east of it a bowl-shaped water feature, which is a remnant of the narrow and elongated Y-shaped water feature (belonging to the late-18th-century layout), which now partly lies to the north-east of the Rust en Vreugdlaan and opens out onto a (navigable) ditch along the Rijksstraatweg. To the north-west of the country house the open character of a meadow has been retained. Around the house the structure of the formal garden layout from around 1913-1914 is recognizable. It consists among other things of paths and terraces paved with light-coloured machine-made stone. At the front of the house (south-east) is a square forecourt with on the north-west side a mortared retaining wall with lower side walls of undressed stone. Within this is a geometric pattern planted with box hedges and grass verges. In the extension of the front façade is a decoratively designed wrought-iron fence, which - interrupted by an access gate - borders the formal garden section in a zigzagging/meandering manner. Espalier limes are placed against the fence. The ends of the fence are accentuated by a transverse axis marked at the end by magnolias. The drive approaches the main axis of the forecourt with a bend. Along the drive and on the forecourt stand various historicizing iron lamp posts from the time of construction of the house.
At the rear of the house at the end of the terraces runs a transverse path in a south-westerly direction, which opens out near a swimming pool. This has a rectangular form with a mirror-arch closure on the south-east side.
Valuation
The historic garden and park layout is of general importance because of its cultural and horticultural historical value
- as part of the historic country estate Backershagen, the structure of which is still clearly recognizable.
- as part of a valuable and extensive zone of country estates on either side of the Rijksstraatweg;
- as a characteristic example of a late-18th-century Early Landscape garden layout, which is presumed to have been designed by J.G. Michael with modifications by C.E.A. Petzold around the middle of the 19th century.
- as part of the oeuvre of garden architects J.G. Michael and C.E.A. Petzold.
- as an example of the Mixed garden style from the early 20th century.
The main structure of the park and garden layout from the different periods is still clearly recognizable.
The park and garden layout has landscape and situational value because of the spatial and functional relationship with the other complex components of the country estate Ivicke.
