Inleiding
Grotendeels vrijstaande, 'brandvrije' ARCHIEFBEWAARPLAATS ten behoeve van het notarieel archief, gebouwd in 1900 in eclectische stijl naar ontwerp van W.C. Metzelaar. De archiefbewaarplaats maakt onderdeel uit van het gerechtscomplex en staat links van het gerechtsgebouw haaks op de Noordsingel.
Omschrijving
De archiefbewaarplaats is aan de zuidelijk gevel via een verbindingsgang verbonden met de meest noordelijke griffierskamer van het gerechtsgebouw en bestaat uit drie bouwlagen en een kapverdieping onder een oorspronkelijk met pannen bedekt zadeldak. Het archiefgebouw is boven een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken in donkerrode baksteen afgewisseld met natuurstenen sokkels, frontons, cordonlijsten en dorpels. De getoogde vensters zijn gevat in negenledige stalen kozijnen. Het drie vensterassen brede en zeven vensterassen diepe pand, wordt geleed door pilasters op natuurstenen sokkels aan weerszijden van de vensters en op de hoeken van het gebouw. Boven de vensters tussen de verdiepingen bevinden zich doorlopende cordonlijsten. Ter hoogte van de cordonlijsten, onder de eerste en de tweede verdieping, worden deze pilasters bekroond door natuurstenen frontons en in de voorgevel onder de kapverdieping door natuurstenen kapitelen. Boven de rollagen van de vensters aan weerszijden gedecoreerde muurankers. De punt van de voorgevel bevat een iets uitkragend trapfries en geprofileerde afdeklijsten bekroond door een fronton in het midden en op de schouders een palmet. De hoofdingang, een eenvoudige dubbele stalen deur met ijzeren hang- en sluitwerk, bevindt zich in het midden van de voorgevel. Boven de ingang is op een natuurstenen plaquette een cartouche met de woorden NOTARIEEL ARCHIEF aangebracht. Beide gevels worden afgesloten door een rechte goot op klossen. Aan de oostzijde is het archief tegen de belendende gevangenis aangebouwd. De één bouwlaag tellende verbindingsgang tussen het gerechtsgebouw en het notarieel archief heeft aan weerszijden eveneens getoogde, doch smallere zesledige vensters. Description
The archive repository is connected to the southernmost facade via a connecting passage with the northernmost registrar's office of the court building and consists of three storeys and a roof storey under an originally tile-covered gabled roof. The archive building is constructed above a rectangular plan in dark red brick alternated with natural stone plinths, pediments, string courses and sills. The arched windows are set in nine-part steel cross windows. The three window bays wide and seven window bays deep building is articulated by pilasters on natural stone plinths either side of the windows and at the corners of the building. Above the windows between the storeys there are continuous string courses. At the level of the string courses, beneath the first and second storeys, these pilasters are crowned by natural stone pediments and in the front facade beneath the roof storey by natural stone capitals. Above the lintels of the windows on either side are decorated ornamental wall anchors. The apex of the front facade contains a slightly projecting stepped frieze and profiled capping mouldings crowned by a pediment in the centre and a palmette on the shoulders. The main entrance, a simple double steel door with iron hinges and fastenings, is located in the middle of the front facade. Above the entrance is a cartouche with the words NOTARIEEL ARCHIEF on a natural stone plaque. Both facades are finished with a straight gutter on brackets. On the east side the archive is built against the adjoining prison. The one-storey connecting passage between the court building and the notarial archive has arched, but narrower six-part windows on either side. The flat roof is furnished with a projecting cornice. The original interior with iron fireproof floors, ceilings with barrel vaults, iron archive cabinets and an iron spiral staircase to the second storey, is virtually entirely preserved.
