Inleiding

Description
Introduction
WAREHOUSE, principal component of the complex "Katoenveem", built in 1920 to a functionalist design by architect J.J. Kanters.
Description
The Katoenveem is constructed in reinforced concrete on a rectangular plan (138 x 43 m) and situated on the pier between the Keile and Lek harbours, with the warehouse (lengthwise) parallel to the Keile harbour. The warehouse comprises one high storey and a partial, lower storey. The warehouse is divided by party walls into five compartments, of which the middle compartment is two bays wide and the remaining compartments are three bays wide.
On the flat roof there are per compartment two double sheds and the storey is also provided with a double shed. The middle compartment bears two single sheds. To the north-east on the flat roof is the obliquely positioned, small rectangular storey in which the sample room was formerly located. North of this small storey, the cubic, overhanging tower of the lift shaft protrudes far above the roof. The party walls likewise project slightly above the flat roof. The warehouse is at 8 m height all round provided with a loading gallery with an iron balustrade. The flat roof projects so far as to overhang the loading gallery as a canopy. Both canopy and gallery floor are supported by tapering concrete consoles. Parallel to the western half of the north facade, a concrete ramp stair leads to the loading gallery. The east facade (Keilestraat) contains on the ground floor, between projecting concrete pillars, 18 iron (sliding) loading doors (Kinnaer system), of which 9 single doors and 9 double doors. On the eastern half of the south facade is a small rectangular low wing with a three-sided extension on the south side. The original rectangular window openings are visible here, but largely bricked up. The wing contains in the east facade a steel door and in the west facade a (small) iron double sliding door. On the south facade of this low building, a concrete straight flight stair leads to the flat roof and thence a like stair to the loading gallery. On the western half of the south facade is a concrete ramp stair to the loading gallery, conforming to the stair on the north facade. The west facade (harbour side) contains on the ground floor per warehouse compartment two double iron (sliding) loading doors. Only the middle compartment contains merely one double loading door. The quay at the Keile harbour is provided with two jetties.
In the interior, each veem compartment forms a large space of approximately 12 metres high, of which approximately 8 metres was available for storage of cotton bales and the remaining 4 metres space accommodates a system of walkways resting on concrete columns and suspended rails, along which the bales could be moved by means of electric chain hoists.

The concrete warehouse "Katoenveem" built in 1920 to a functionalist design by J.J. Kanters, is of general significance on account of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical, typological and construction-historical value and is furthermore of significance within the (warehouse) oeuvre of architect J.J. Kanters.
