Inleiding

Introduction

Former TOWNHOUSE, built in 1896 on the commission of building contractor C. Kurpershoek, according to an (early) Transitional Architecture design by Rotterdam architect P.G. Buskens.

N.B. The property is internally connected with the property at Schiekade 75 (in eclectic style), which is not protected as a national monument, and shares together with this property on the rear side a very deep garden with landscape design.

Description

The (non-detached) townhouse is constructed on a rectangular floor plan and comprises a basement, two storeys and an attic storey. The front facade, four bays wide, is arranged asymmetrically and, above a rusticated natural stone plinth at the level of the basement, is constructed in red facing brick with details of natural stone and yellow facing brick. The leaded (sash) windows and doors are rectangular or arched with wooden frames. The gabled roof, with the ridge parallel to Schiekade, is covered with slate. The front sides of the corner gables are detailed in red brick and natural stone saddle-backs as stepped gables. At the level of the basement there are respectively (from left to right): the wooden, profiled service entrance with ironwork and decorative ironwork, a three-part window with round fanlights, a semicircular window and the internal natural stone staircase to the front door. At the level of the bel-étage there are on the left two rectangular windows, framed at the top with natural stone. Above this is a frieze with a tile tableau with the inscription "sine labore nihil". To the right of these windows the entrance portico under a round arch of yellow facing brick and natural stone voussoirs. This arch is supported on the right side by a hardstone column. Following this there is to the right, above the staircase, a half round arch of yellow facing brick. The front door is of decoratively profiled blank wood with wrought-iron ornamental railings for the small windows. To the right of the door there is a round-arched window. On the second storey on the left there are two coupled windows framed with a spandrel of yellow facing brick and under a shared decorative roll moulding. In the arch of the roll moulding a tile tableau is applied. Above the entrance section there is a natural stone balcony with a rectangular door with stepped natural stone framing. To the right of this one arched window framed with a spandrel of yellow facing brick, above which a tile tableau with the year "1896". Next to the balcony, below the window there is a natural stone medallion in a square frame with a profile knight's portrait. Below the profiled cornice (on profiled brackets) there is a cornice decorated with glazed tiles. Cornice and frieze are terminated with carved figures: on the left a lion, on the right a boy. The entrance bay is built up higher as a small tower in which at the level of the attic storey there is a rectangular three-light window with natural stone mullions. The tower has a hipped roof with wrought-iron cresting. Cornice and frieze of the tower are formed in accordance with the previously described cornice and frieze. To the left of the tower on the roof is a small roof dormer with a tower spire and ornate iron cresting. The rear facade is constructed entirely in red brick and contains on the left at ground level a projecting building section with doors to the garden. Above this on the storey there is a balcony with wooden and wrought-iron balustrade. On the storey above this on the right there is a loggia with wooden and wrought-iron balustrade and on the attic storey on the left a balcony. The facade ends in a crow-step gable with wooden wind braces and rafter feet. In the interior are among others still original: the patterned tile floors in the basement and the richly decorated hall and the stairwell. The hall and stairwell are provided with marble wainscoting above which stucco blockwork and here and there stucco ornaments. The doors are framed with profiled wooden and stucco decorations. The hall is provided with a barrel vault supported by stucco-decorated consoles. The staircase still has the original wooden profiled stair rail.

Valuation

Townhouse in Transitional Architecture built in 1896 of general importance due to architectural and cultural-historical value, as well as of importance as an early work within the oeuvre of Rotterdam architect P.G. Buskens and as a specimen of Schiekade architecture from before the damming of the Schie during the Second World War.
