The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Just south of S-casemate K56, across the Defence Canal, lies weir and distribution work S10. This belongs to the original design of the Defence Canal and dates from 1939. By means of the distribution work, the height of the water level in the Defence Canal could be regulated and inundations could possibly be carried out. The weir is defended by the aforementioned casemate.

Description.

Each weir, which is positioned at right angles to the course of the Defence Canal, consists of a concrete monolith of approximately fifteen metres in length, which is at most one metre thick and has an estimated height (partly below the water surface) of at most approximately three metres. The height of the fixed concrete weir opening varies according to local requirements. In a few cases the opening is divided by a concrete column, but at Venray it is everywhere a single wide opening. Sometimes the steel slide, or part of it, is still present. The remaining obstacles placed on the pillars and slide are of importance: sharp downward-pointing pins or upstanding teeth were intended to make infantry crossings impossible. The latter components are no longer present on this weir.

Valuation.

The distribution work is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as a special expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and building-historical significance because of the special use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in adapting water management for military purposes. It is also of significance for the typological development of various defensive objects and structures with regard to national land defence.

The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of the land defence (the entirety of positions on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel area, which as a military landscape is of cultural-historical significance. The anti-tank ditch has a special historic-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions of the area. This integration also gives the complex great historical experiential value.

Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the intactness of the entire complex. As a large-scale military complex and a reminder of a large-scale defence measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg, the entire position is rare.
