Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Omschrijving.

Description
Introduction.
North of casemate K56 stands on the western embankment of the Defence or Peel Canal the S-casemate K57, dating from 1939-1940. The embankment at this location has been largely excavated.
Description.
The casemate has lost any historical-spatial relationship with the open terrain to the east of the canal due to post-war land redistribution of the canal's foreground. The casemate is intact and shows no traces of combat action. For an extensive description of the casemate type we refer to the complex description (Peel-Raam Fortification, municipality of Venray, number: 568400).
Valuation.
The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and as such is an important document of military history. It is of architectural and building-historical importance because of the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the processing of reinforced concrete. It is also important for the typological development of various defence objects and structures concerning national territorial defence.
The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of territorial defence (the totality of fortifications on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel region which as a military landscape is of cultural-historical importance. The casemate has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, watercourses and soil conditions of the area. This interweaving also gives the complex great experiential value. Furthermore it should be pointed out that the entire complex is intact. In this respect the entire fortification as a large-scale military complex and reminder of a large-scale defence measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
