Omschrijving

Description

CAMPHOUSE "Rode Valkennest", TERRACE AREA, OPEN-AIR THEATRE and BUST of Wibaut. The camphouse was built in 1928-1929, most likely designed by architect J.H. Mulder jr. (1888-1960) of the Amsterdam Cooperative Architects Bureau. The similarities in external appearance with the building "De Paasheuvel" are substantial. The most important alterations to the property are: a small extension at the front, the closing of the covered side terrace on the left side and the renovation of the interior. The terrace area and the open-air theatre were created in 1937 as a work relief project for unemployed youth designed by landscape architect G. Bleeker. Around that time the bust of Wibaut was also placed (illegible signature) as thanks for financing the construction.

The CAMPHOUSE "Rode Valkennest", situated on a hill, is oriented with its front façade towards the south. The building has one storey and an attic on a virtually rectangular floor plan. The reed-thatched hipped roof has an overhang and a half-hipped end at the front. The ridge is covered with red reed ridging. No roof dormers are installed in the roof sections. Elongated wooden band windows are cut out in the rendered façades. These band windows are composed of a series of two- or three-light (casement and side-hung) windows with horizontal glazing bars. The covered side terrace on the right side leads to a door providing access to a still original toilet group with panel doors.

On the south side of the camphouse a TERRACE AREA and an OPEN-AIR THEATRE were laid out in 1937 to the design of landscape architect G. Bleeker. The terrace walls and stairs form the gradual transition from the house to the surrounding landscape. The steps of the platform stairs are enclosed on both sides between small walls. The brick walls and stairs are laid in Norwegian bond with recessed joints and are finished with roll courses. The platform overlooks a semicircular play area to the south. The stands are stacked against a slope in six rows in a semicircle around it. The BUST of F.M. Wibaut carved from stone in Expressionist style is placed on a mortared plinth. A stone is placed against the plinth with the inscription: "Dr. F.M. Wibaut". A stone is placed next to the plinth with the inscription: "Rode Valken" and the symbol in relief (a red falcon set in a blue circle, around which the letters AJC).

Valuation

CAMPHOUSE "Rode Valkennest", TERRACE AREA, OPEN-AIR THEATRE and BUST of Wibaut.

- Of architectural historical value as a typologically good and recognizable example of a wooden camphouse with stylistic influences from the Amsterdam School and rural architecture. The building is carefully designed with attention to detail and has been reasonably well preserved in terms of principal form, façade arrangement and use of materials. The building is of significance to the oeuvre of the socially committed architect J.H. Mulder jr. (1888-1960) from Amsterdam. The terrace area and open-air theatre are characteristic of the work of landscape architect G. Bleeker. The BUST of Wibaut has art historical value.

- Of urban planning value due to the striking location of the building on a hill in the green Veluwe region. In the siting and orientation of the building, terrace and theatre, functional use was made of the natural character of the undulating terrain. The object forms an essential part of the complex "De Paasheuvel" which is of national cultural historical importance.

- Of cultural historical value as a special expression of a social-cultural development; namely the cultural education and upbringing of socialist working-class youth during (thematic) holiday camps in the green surroundings of the Veluwe village of Vierhouten ("culture-socialism").
