Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The pseudo-basilical CHURCH BUILDING (A) has a predominantly rectangular plan with stepped terminations at the short sides. On the north side, to the east and west, the plan is extended with a predominantly square footprint of the sacristy and the tower respectively. The church building, constructed in brick (English bond), is characterised by recessed wall and roof planes; predominantly gabled roofs covered with slate in Rhine-style pattern. The transept arms, which are expressed only in the elevation, contain two adjacent gabled roofs truncated at mid-height of the roof of the nave. The change in the space that is vaulted over can be read each time from the recessing of the roof planes. The narrow entrance vestibule with three entrance doors precedes the broader and higher nave. The low and narrow side aisles which merge into the transept arms consist solely of a side passage covered by a lean-to roof and which extends up to below the clerestory. At the location of the choir and the apse with ambulatory, the roof planes step back in stages. The gables rest on a drainage channel enclosed by a drip moulding and are terminated below the mostly angled gutters on cut blocks by a continuous dogtooth moulding. The windows with leaded glass are finished in herringbone arch form and contain a tilted protruding brick drip moulding. Of the three windows varying in size, the large variant, in the stepped gables of the front facade and transept ends, consists of three brick mullions which merge into cross-shaped and likewise brick tracery in the window head, provided with a drip moulding. The window of the middle variant, which principally appears in the clerestory and on either side of the entrance section, is completely filled with this described tracery. In the small variant windows at the location of the side aisles, choir section and sacristy, tracery is absent and these consist only of leaded glass panes. The stepped gables at the front and those of the transept ends are provided beneath the sloping roof lines with a drip moulding and a climbing frieze. In the stepped gables at the rear, this climbing frieze is absent. The two louvres and light slits occurring on each side of the tower are likewise finished in herringbone arch form and are provided with a brick drip moulding. The sloping sides of the spout gable, interrupted by shoulders, are likewise bevelled with a drip moulding. On the front and rear sides is located the clock face consisting of red and green-glazed tiles with yellow numerals. The projecting termination of the side gables with built-out decorative brickwork corresponds to the projecting shoulders of the spout gable on the front and rear sides of the tower.
The FRONT FACADE (west side) with projecting entrance section has three wing doors placed side by side, set between recessed reveals. Separated by leaded glass fanlights, these connect to the likewise recessed upper section of the shallow porch under one broad concrete lintel upon which a drip moulding rests. The stepped gable is occupied by a window described earlier. The roof tiles of the entrance section merge into the gabled roof of the receding flanks of the front facade with roof tiles carried down. Only at the location where the height of the risalit reaches the roof pitch of the flanks, on either side an angled gutter is placed. The two recessed side sections beside the door section contain a window of the middle variant type. The higher and broader end gable of the nave closes off the whole to the rear. The left roof tile is concealed behind the tower placed to the left of the front facade. Above the clamped door, identical to the church doors, beneath a leaded glass fanlight, at mid-height of the tower, war damage to the masonry is visible, restored.
The LEFT SIDE GABLE (north side) is scarcely visible from the Dorpsstraat due to the placement of the tower and the adjoining intermediate section (separate national monument number 523907). Heavy buttresses covered with slate on the offsets divide the exterior gables into wall planes. In the corner of the tower and intermediate section is placed a flat-roofed single-storey extension spanning the width of two bays up to the transept arm. To the left of the previously described transept arm, besides an extension (confessional room), is the sacristy with a tent roof covered with quarry slates, upon which two roof cresting ornaments. On the east and west sides, a flat-roofed extension adjoins. The north side contains three small window types and a door; the rear side has two small panes. In the roof plane of the nave, to the left and right of the transept arm, are dormer windows with hipped rooflets capped with shutters.
The REAR GABLE (east side) likewise consists of telescopically superimposed spaces. In the five-sided choir termination with a five-sided hipped roof leaning against the end wall of the choir, in the apse and the choir ambulatory on each side a small window occurs. The RIGHT SIDE GABLE (south side), which mirrors the left, is more balanced in design due to the absence of low extensions. The wall plane of the entrance vestibule on the left is executed blind. The side aisle under lean-to roof which runs up to the transept arm and spans two bays contains per bay three small windows; the west side, which is parallel to the front facade, contains however one window. The clerestory in the right side gable consists of the standard type window which is completely filled with brick tracery. The bays are separated from each other both in the clerestory and at ground level by buttresses of the type described earlier. Three heavily executed examples support the two-bay transept arm. To the right of this, one more bay adjoins, identical in disposition to the bays to the left of the transept arm. The choir section contains one bay with a window of the middle type beneath an extension whose end wall is executed blind, with cut hipped roof adjoins. The INTERIOR contains many valuable and well-preserved components. On either side of the entrance vestibule, the baptistery is situated on the left and the Chapel of Mary on the right. Three well-preserved wing (panel) doors give access to the nave, with side passages concealed behind relieving arches on the left and right behind. Vaults in fair-faced brickwork (yellow brick) separated by parabolic arch ribs (the structural parts in red) divide the three bays. In the walls appear yellow and green-glazed decorative bands (originating from Czechoslovakia). The seating plan as well as the colour scheme of floor tiles laid in patterns are original. Only at the front by the choir has a section of seating been altered for the sake of various ceremonies. It is noteworthy that the communion benches have been preserved with on the left a text 'ACCI / PITE ET' / and on the right 'MAM / DUCATE'. The high altar with panels by Hans Mengelberg 'AD. 1934', possesses a crucifix with spiritual streams after a design by Jan Toorop. Some stained-glass windows come from a workshop in Kevelaer.
