Inleiding

Introduction

This WATER TOWER was built in 1938 according to a design by ir. Th.K.J. Koch in a business-like expressionist architectural style. Characteristic features of this design include, among other things, the asymmetrical and massive main form with plastic accents (projecting stair tower and reservoir), the brick facades with recessed joints, horizontal concrete bands and steel windows. Other water towers designed by Koch stand in Oosterbeek (1938, out of use and altered) and Wageningen (1948).

Originally, the water supply company of the municipality of Wageningen supplied water to these towers. After this water tower came into the ownership of the municipality of Renkum in 1960, the tower was taken out of service and an underground booster reservoir was put into operation beside it.

The water tower stands in the southwestern corner of the village centre Doorwerth at a high point (approximately 55 metres above NAP) of the ice-pushed ridge directly north of the Rhine channel. The free-standing tower stands on the west side of the Spechtlaan opposite the mouth of the IJsvogellaan on the aforementioned street. Due to the high location in a rural area, it was possible to construct a relatively low tower (just over 18 metres above ground level) and a small reservoir (only 50 to 60 cubic metres) to obtain sufficient pressure on the pipe network.

Description

The WATER TOWER consists of a rectangular main building on a square floor plan (approximately 6 x 6 metres) and an attached semi-circular staircase housing on the south side. The staircase housing extends several metres above the main building. Both building components have a flat roof bordered all round by a masonry parapet with artificial stone coping. In the parapet on top of the staircase housing a series of vertical slits is cut out.

The load-bearing facades of yellow brick are laid in Flemish bond with recessed joints. The plinth is executed in artificial stone. The facades are symmetrically arranged. The entrance (wooden door) is located on the street side in the east facade between two six-pane windows and under a curved concrete canopy. The foundation, floors, spiral staircase and reservoir are also of concrete. The tower has four building storeys of varying height. The concrete flat-bottomed reservoir in the uppermost storey has a diameter of approximately 5 metres and a height of approximately 3 metres. The highest possible water level in the reservoir is approximately 13.5 metres above ground level. Around the reservoir a walkway has been laid out which projects beyond the facade line at three points. The reservoir is thus marked on the outside by small curved cantilevers in the north, east and west facades. These cantilevers are each fitted with two rectangular windows with four horizontal bands of concrete. The cut-out window openings in the first, second and third storeys have iron six-pane windows. The staircase housing receives daylight through several narrow roof lights.

Valuation

WATER TOWER from 1938.

- Of architectural-historical value as a good and intact example in interior and exterior of a drinking water tower in a business-like expressionist architectural style. This simple and exceptionally small water tower is, in terms of design, representative of the phase in the development of water tower construction in which aesthetically satisfying solutions were increasingly sought in more massive forms (no distinction between lower and upper structure, ornamentation directed at the whole, no articulation but plasticity). As such, the object is of importance for the oeuvre of ir. Th.K.J. Koch.

- Of urban-planning value due to the striking location in a wooded environment at a high point of the ice-pushed ridge near the Rhine channel.

- Of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a technical development, namely the history of drinking water supply in the rural area of the Netherlands since approximately 1900. As such, this water tower is of importance as a reminder of the drinking water supply in the municipality of Renkum.
