Inleiding

Introduction

Former COACHMAN'S HOUSE of the estate DE WOLFSBERG built around 1860 under the influence of the Chalet style at the commission of the Rijnbende family. The coach house is situated on the west side of the Knapheideweg at the edge of the village of Groesbeek. The house is located on a triangular plot near the point where the Knapheideweg joins the Mooksebaan which forms the connection between the villages of Groesbeek and Mook. Below the house, a garage was later built next to the existing cellars, accessible via a driveway on the side of the left side wall.

Description

The coachman's house is built on an almost rectangular floor plan and has two storeys under a gently sloping overhanging gabled roof on consoles covered with a non-original bituminous roof covering. On the front of the house, running the full width of the facade on the ground floor, there is a veranda constructed in wood above which a balcony is positioned, above which the roof is continued. The facades are built of brick, laid in English bond. Between the ground floor and the first floor, a brick-nogging course is applied in the side walls and the back wall. The building has a surrounding rendered grey-washed plinth. The window and door openings are, unless otherwise stated in the text below, closed by brick lintels. All windows are provided with wooden sills and have hinged shutters. The FRONT FACADE is symmetrically arranged and has three window bays. On the ground floor there is a brick stoop running the full width of the facade, which is laid with grey-black and white tiles forming various decorative motifs. At the entrance, the text SALVE is incorporated into this paving. The veranda at the front is formed by four wooden posts placed on rendered brick supports provided with stone coping plates, which support the decorative brace of the roof overhang. At the height of the first floor, these posts carry a framework on which a balcony is positioned, which is corbelled at the level of the central bay. The balcony is provided with a balustrade filled with wooden slat work. The post and framework are provided with chamfered edges. The posts are provided with pierced consoles at the height of the balcony and at the height of the decorative brace. The facade has on the ground floor in the centre the entrance which is provided with a simple panel door and a two-light fanlight. On either side of the entrance there is a window provided with a four-light sash window with a two-light fanlight. The first floor has two balcony door openings with double six-light balcony doors with shutters on either side and a six-light sash window with shutters. The LEFT SIDE WALL is blank. In this wall a garage door opening has been made in more recent times at the height of the basement. The BACK WALL has on the ground floor on the left a panel door with a two-light fanlight and on the right a window with a four-light sash window with a two-light fanlight. The first floor has two windows with six-light sash windows between which a round window with a cast-iron frame. The RIGHT SIDE WALL has in the right part of the wall of the ground floor two small rectangular windows. The INTERIOR retains several original components including a central corridor with ochre and black tiles and a wooden fireplace mantel on the first floor.

Valuation

Former COACHMAN'S HOUSE in Chalet style from c.1860

- Of architectural historical value as a well preserved coachman's house, particularly in respect to the exterior, executed in rich Chalet style on an estate. The house stands out due to the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design, the fine proportions and special detailing in formal and material execution. This is particularly expressed in the veranda with overlying balcony which runs the full width of the front facade and is provided with fine carved work.

- Of urban planning value as an essential component of the estate De Wolfsberg. The house forms a defining element in the street scene in the location due to its positioning on a triangular site at the western village entrance formed by the junction of the Knapheideweg and the Mooksebaan.

- Of cultural historical value as a recognisable element from a social development. The coach house gives a good picture of the housing of the staff of a new, arising particularly through the industrialisation of the Netherlands in the second half of the nineteenth century, well-to-do elite that preferred to settle in substantial villas or country houses outside the city in an environment with much natural beauty and good connections to the city. This new population group contributed to the fact that the social stratification and standing of the village of Groesbeek and surroundings changed substantially. The house also possesses typological value.
