Inleiding

Waardering

GEMAAL "Van Citters I" en Niftrikse UITWATERINGSSLUIS.

Introduction

The PUMPING STATION "Van Citters I" was built in 1926 on the inner dike near the DRAINAGE LOCK "Niftrikse Sluis". The pumping station and the lock form a functional unit. This lock, dating from the middle of the 19th century, forms the connection between the Niftrikse Wetering (1,600 ha.) and the Maas. With the construction of the pumping station it became possible to discharge water even when the water level of the Maas was higher than in the wetering. The pumping station is located to the northwest of the village centre of Niftrik near the hamlet of Lienden. The object stands on the winding Maasbandijk at the location of a former river bend.

The first plans of the polder district for (steam) pumping stations at the Balgoijse and Niftrikse locks were drawn up in 1913 by the engineering firm Van Hasselt and De Koning and only executed in 1926. Partly due to influence from the provincial government, which was keen to stimulate the use of electricity in the countryside, it was decided to install pumps driven by electric motors. This also made it possible to build much smaller buildings than had been the case with steam pumping stations. The official opening of both pumping stations by the former commissioner of the queen in Gelderland Baron S. van Citters took place in 1929. In the nineteen-fifties the motors and probably also the pumps were renewed (same system and make as the old specimens). The automatic screen cleaner was added later and falls outside the protection.

Description

The PUMPING STATION consists of a substructure of white-painted concrete incorporated in the dike body and a superstructure of brickwork erected above dike level. The superstructure has one storey and a gabled roof with the ridge direction parallel to the dike. The ridge ends are marked by brickwork chimneys. The roof is covered with red Dutch tiles and drains via zinc gutters. The tall storey under the gabled roof serves as a machine room. Below the machine room lies the concrete pump cellar. Across the full width of the main building there is on the river side a lower extension with flat roof (office and transformer room). The brick FACADES of the superstructure are laid in Flemish bond. The recessed wall openings are closed by roll joints. The entrance to the pumping station is located in the short gable on the upstream side. Both short sides have in the centre of the gable top a six-light window. In the long facade on the river side there is directly under the roof edge a cemented panel with the inscription: "VAN CITTERS I". This panel is flanked on both sides by a white stone with the inscriptions: "ANNO" and "1926". The flat-roofed extension has at the office location a six-light sash window with shutters. The adjacent transformer room is lit by some glass bricks and is accessible via a door in the short side. The long facade on the polder side has in the superstructure three tall back-light windows. The middle window has a sliding lower sash. Above the windows is a white-painted concrete band (at the level of the walkway in the interior). The substructure provides space for one small opening for natural discharge (no longer in use) and two large openings with metal screens for artificial discharge. From the pump cellar a steel double door and a window with two six-light casement windows open onto the platform laid above the openings. The concrete substructure has on the river side two outlets that can be closed by vertically sliding metal lift gates. Each gate is operated from the concrete platform above by a lever (with turning wheel).

The SPATIAL LAYOUT of the main building consists of a pump cellar with toilet and a machine room with open loft (boarded roof truss with two ridge posts). In the extension with flat roof an office space and a transformer room are housed. In the machine room two electric motors are installed by the firm Brooks (Huddersfield England). These motors drive via a vertical shaft two closed screw pumps. These pumps, installed in the pump cellar and made by the firm Pannevis, have a capacity of 47.7 and 74.3 cubic metres per minute respectively. The motors can be lifted by a travelling gantry (machine factory Pannevis Utrecht). A board is hung in the machine room with the inscription: "The complete installation executed by N.V. Machine factory "Hoogenlande" formerly Pannevis & Zoon Utrecht Holland".

The LOCK incorporated in the Maasbandijk has halfway along the narrow passage a double steel door opening towards the river (originally wooden specimens) under a barrel vault. The brick wing and front walls are laid in Flemish bond. In the wing walls on the river side there are grooves for inserting stop logs.

Valuation

PUMPING STATION "Van Citters I" and Niftrikse DRAINAGE LOCK.

- Of architectural historical value as a typologically good and intact example in interior and exterior of a carefully designed and functionally planned pumping station from 1926, notable for the fact that the visible superstructure in main form and material use aligns with rural architecture and thus conceals modern technology. The relatively small housing and the integrated transformer room allude to the then modern energy source electricity with which the pumping station is powered. The object is important because of the functional coherence between the constituent parts, namely the 19th century drainage lock and the later added pumping station.

- Of urban planning value because of the siting of the object, connected with the development and layout of the polder and the water management of the unreliable rain river the Maas. The built object is important as a human intervention in historical-spatial relation with the roads, waterways and soil conditions at the location. The isolated pumping station plays an image-defining role in the landscape area on the border of polder and river.

- Of cultural historical value as a distinctive expression of a landscape and technical development; in this case the control of water management in a polder bordering the Maas, initially by means of a drainage lock and since 1926 with an added pumping station powered by electricity.
