Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

ENTRANCE GATE to the estate De Hoge Veluwe, designed in 1920 by A.J. Kropholler. This is a carriage gate of type II which is located in the fencing in the southwest of the estate at the Harderwijkerweg.

From 1909 onwards, the estate De Hoge Veluwe was created by the purchasing and merging of lands by the Rotterdam manufacturer couple Helene Müller (1869-1939) and Anthony G. Kröller (1862-1941). The old public roads that ran across the lands were closed and rerouted at Kröller's expense. The newly created estate, covering approximately 6800 hectares, was enclosed by fencing. This new country seat created by the couple served primarily as a hunting ground and country residence for the family and their guests. A farming operation was also conducted on the estate. Moreover, within De Hoge Veluwe the artistic ideal that Helene Müller had in mind was realized. The grounds were arranged according to her instructions with architecture and works of art, which were each in their own way to make visible the unity of art and nature that she advocated. Finally, a large museum building was to be realized on the grounds to house the art collection of Mrs. Kröller.

To facilitate the development of the estate, the couple engaged various architects. Buildings on the estate were actually executed according to designs by H.P. BERLAGE, the Belgian HENRY VAN DE VELDE and A.J. KROPHOLLER. The sculptural works incorporated in the complex are by the sculptors J. MENDES DA COSTA and JOHN RAEDECKER.

Following the economic crisis, in 1928 the management of the estate was transferred to the Kröller-Müller Foundation. In 1935 the Foundation The National Park de Hoge Veluwe was established.

The estate is bounded by a kilometre-long fencing, with monumental ENTRANCE GATES at important locations. The entrance gates are all designed in a similar manner, with minor variants, according to designs by Kropholler from 1920. In addition to containing wildlife, the gates and fencing expressed that the couple regarded their acquired territory as a unity and themselves as major landowners. There were plans to realize small settlements at the entrances. Although this hardly came to fruition, such an arrangement is present in outline at the entrance on the Harskampweg and at the service entrance on the Apeldoornseweg.

Description

The ENTRANCE GATE consists of a wrought-iron carriage gate between brick piers which connect on both sides to the fencing.

The two square brick gate piers are laid up in English bond and are topped with pieces of Maulbronn sandstone, which are finished straight on the top and have no inscription on the front. Iron standards are attached to the piers, made of decorative wrought work. Within these are somewhat lower wings, with simple vertical pickets and a diagonal connecting picket. On both sides against the brick piers are protective irons. The wrought iron is painted green.

Valuation

ENTRANCE GATE on the Harderwijkerweg designed in 1920 by Kropholler

- Of architectural-historical value as an intact and good typological example of an entrance gate from the twenties. The gatework forms part of a series of monumental gates in the fencing of the estate De Hoge Veluwe, which are designed in a similar manner, with brick piers and decorative wrought-iron gates.

- Of urban-planning value as an inseparable component of the enclosure of the estate De Hoge Veluwe, where monumental carriage gates at important points mark the entrances to the estate.

- Of cultural-historical value as part of the estate De Hoge Veluwe which from 1909 was merged and arranged by the married couple Kröller-Müller.
