Inleiding

Introduction

GATE ENTRANCE to the estate De Hoge Veluwe, designed in 1920 by A.J. Kropholler. This is a carriage gate of type II, on the Harderwijkerweg, near the Reemsterweg.

From 1909 onwards the estate De Hoge Veluwe came into being through the purchase and consolidation of lands by the Rotterdam industrialist couple Helene Müller (1869-1939) and Anthony G. Kröller (1862-1941). The old public roads that ran across the lands were closed and rerouted at Kröller's expense. Around the newly created estate, some 6800 hectares in size, a fence was erected. This country seat created by the couple served primarily as a hunting ground and country retreat for the family and their guests. A farming operation was also conducted on the estate. Furthermore, within De Hoge Veluwe the artistic ideal that Helene Müller envisioned was realised. The grounds were arranged at her behest with architecture and artworks, which were all to make visible in their own way the unity of art and nature that she advocated. Finally, a large museum building was to be realised on the grounds, to house Mrs. Kröller's art collection.

To arrange the estate, the couple succeeded in engaging various architects. Buildings by H.P. BERLAGE, the Belgian HENRY VAN DE VELDE and by A.J. KROPHOLLER were actually constructed on the estate. The sculptural works to be incorporated in the complex were by the sculptors J. MENDES DA COSTA and JOHN RAEDECKER.

Following the economic crisis, in 1928 the management of the estate was transferred to the Stichting Kroller-Muller. In 1935 the Stichting Het Nationale Park de Hoge Veluwe was established.

The estate is bounded by a kilometre-long fence, with monumental GATE ENTRANCES at important locations. The gate entrances are all designed in a comparable manner, with minor variations, according to designs by Kropholler from 1920. Besides containing wild animals, the gates and fencing were an expression of the couple seeing their acquired territory as a unity and themselves as major landowners. There were plans to realise small settlements at the entrances. Although this was scarcely realised, such a layout is present in outline at the entrance on the Harskampweg and at the service entrance on the Apeldoornseweg.

Description

The GATE ENTRANCE projects slightly forward from the fence of the estate, creating an enclosed courtyard. The whole consists of a wrought-iron carriage gate between brick pillars and on either side four fixed gates between pillars. The two square brick gate pillars are built in English bond and are topped with pieces of Maulbronner sandstone, with a slightly recessed and tent-shaped crown. On the front of the natural stone capping stones the name of the estate is carved, on the left "Hooge" and on the right "Veluwe". Iron standards are attached to the pillars, to which swing gates are hung. On either side are protective irons. The fixed gates are simple unadorned gates on a brick plinth, with vertical bars between and on either side of the carriage gate four lower brick pillars topped with simple natural stone capping pieces. The wrought-iron gates are painted green.

Valuation

GATE ENTRANCE designed in 1920 by Kropholler

-Of architectural-historical value as an intact and good typological example of an entrance gate from the nineteen-twenties. The gate forms part of a series of monumental gates in the fence of the estate De Hoge Veluwe, which are designed in a comparable manner, with brick pillars and decorative wrought-iron gates.

-Of urban planning value as an inseparable component of the fence of the estate De Hoge Veluwe, where monumental carriage gates at important points mark the entrances to the estate.

-Of cultural-historical value as part of the estate De Hoge Veluwe that from 1909 was consolidated and arranged by the couple Kröller-Müller.
