Inleiding

Introduction

MUSEUM Kröller-Müller is located in woodland beside the Houtkampweg, within a park-like setting with grass areas, shrubs and trees. The terrain on the north side of the museum is situated slightly higher than the south side. From the front facade a low retaining wall has been built along the Houtkampweg. The museum is a design by HENRY VAN DE VELDE commissioned by the Kröller-Müller Foundation. Pending the construction of the Grote Museum on the Franse Berg, this 'interim museum' was executed in 1937-1938, based on designs from 1925, 1933 and 1936. Mrs Kröller herself furnished the first rooms in 1938. Later the museum was extended, based on designs from 1941-1942 by Van de Velde. Due to the outbreak of war these plans could only be executed in 1944. In 1955 a third extension followed with sculpture hall and auditorium, likewise based on earlier designs. The extension added in 1969-1977 by W.G. Quist does not meet the fifty-year age requirement stipulated in the Heritage Act and is not included in the national protection. Behind Quist's new wing extends the sculpture garden, which was envisaged by Mrs Kröller-Müller from the outset, but of which only a small part was realised during her lifetime.

Description

The MUSEUM is a strongly horizontally oriented, elongated building. Centrally located is a building volume that steps outward in tiers with a cross-shaped interior courtyard. On either side of this are two rectangular building volumes positioned at right angles to each other from respectively 1936-1938 (west side) and 1944 (east side). On the east side, set slightly back, the sculpture hall was built in 1955 and on the south-east side the auditorium with its characteristic bevelled corners. The museum is constructed in red brick with a strip of elongated brickwork in stretcher bond both at the base and beneath the eaves line. The flat roofs are fitted with concrete overhangs and feature a large number of rectangular roof lights for illuminating the art collection. With the exception of the sculpture hall and the windows around the central interior courtyard, the museum is characterised by nearly blank walls. The central cross-shaped section was built to house the core of Mrs Kröller's art collection, namely the Van Gogh collection. The importance is emphasised by the greater height compared to the other building volumes and by the special floor plan, in which a reference to the Saint Hubert's Cross can be discerned. In 1937-1938 a stylised stag's antlers from the Saint Hubert legend were also incorporated in the north facade. This emblem of the De Hoge Veluwe estate is executed in wood and paint and is a design by Henry Van de Velde. The former main entrance to the museum, from which the art collection could also be viewed in chronological order as intended by Mrs Kröller-Müller, is located in the western building volume directly on the Houtkampweg. There is a broad recessed entrance section with steps and a raised platform and a high-set composite window sequence, which is continued to halfway along the side facades. The canopy above the main entrance continues through into the upper lintels of the window sections. The original entrance door, with inward-curved corners, was replaced during a renovation in the seventies, when the entrance ceased to be the main entrance. The entrance now has a flat door. On the south side of the main entrance is an extension with identical windows to the front facade. The volume running parallel to the road containing the main entrance comprised the oldest art from the Kröller-Müller collection. Behind this are located: an elongated building volume, the cross-shaped central section, a second elongated volume and another section built transversely to that, in which Mrs Kröller-Müller's painting collection ended with the Van der Lecks. In 1955 the sculpture hall was built at right angles to the last section, which is characterised by a number of large floor-to-ceiling windows that emphasise the relationship with the surrounding woodland. Smaller windows have been incorporated in the corners of the sculpture hall. South of the sculpture hall lies the basement auditorium. It is a rectangular building volume with overhanging eaves line. The southern end has bevelled corners and a series of high-placed windows, the upper lintel of which is executed as a continuous moulding. On the flat roof stands a slightly recessed raised roof structure that follows the shape of the floor plan.

In the INTERIOR the original spatial layout has largely remained in its original state. There is a central corridor from the former main entrance to the new wing, consistently flanked by cabinets. At the level of the interior courtyard there are no cabinets but broad wings that run around the courtyard. The sculpture hall is an open space with large windows where the relationship with the surrounding nature is important. The auditorium consists of a low section for the public and a stage with a slightly raised ambulatory on the south side. The ambulatory is accessible by stairs and follows the shape of the bevelled corners in the floor plan. In the basement of the auditorium are the original dressing rooms with fixtures.

Valuation

KRÖLLER-MÜLLER MUSEUM based on a design by Van de Velde from 1937-1938, with extensions from 1944 and 1955.

-Of architectural-historical value as a good and largely intact example of a museum building from the late nineteen-thirties, designed by H. van de Velde. The museum building is characterised by aesthetic qualities in its design, such as the austere principal form composed of flat-roofed cubic volumes. As a museum it has typological value in that it features a sequence of different cabinets on either side of a corridor, with predominantly closed facades and light from above. As such it is important within architectural and art history as it exemplifies a phase in the conception of the museum presentation of art. The building has also played an important role in the history of museum architecture. The sculpture hall and auditorium added in 1955 form part of the original design and demonstrate conceptions regarding respectively the presentation of sculpture in relation to the natural surroundings of the building and the relationship with other art forms.

-Of urban planning value as a functional component of the De Hoge Veluwe estate, where it plays an important visual role and is important for maintaining the historical context of the estate.

-Of cultural-historical value as part of the De Hoge Veluwe estate, which has been assembled and developed by the married couple Kröller-Müller since 1909.
