Inleiding

Description
Introduction
ORIENTATION TABLE commissioned by the married couple Kröller-Müller and made around 1920, after a design by H. VAN DE VELDE or by H.P. BERLAGE with a compass rose by J. MENDES DA COSTA. The table is located at one of the highest points of the estate De Hoge Veluwe south of the Houtkampweg and west of the Wildbaanweg.
From 1909 onwards the estate De Hoge Veluwe was created through the purchase and combining of land by the Rotterdam manufacturer couple Helene Müller (1869-1939) and Anthony G. Kröller (1862-1941). The old public roads that ran over the land were closed and diverted at Kröller's expense. Around the newly created estate, which covered some 6800 hectares, a fence was erected. This country seat created by the couple served primarily as a hunting ground and country residence for the family and their guests. A farm was also operated on the estate. Furthermore, within De Hoge Veluwe the artistic ideal that Helene Müller envisioned was realised. The grounds were laid out on her instructions with architecture and works of art, which were all to display in their own way the unity of art and nature that she advocated. Finally, a large museum building was to be realised on the grounds to house the art collection of Mrs Kröller.
In order to develop the estate, the couple managed to engage various architects. Buildings by H.P. BERLAGE, the Belgian HENRY VAN DE VELDE and by A.J. KROPHOLLER were actually executed on the estate. The sculptural works to be included in the complex are by the sculptors J. MENDES DA COSTA and JOHN RAEDECKER.
Following the economic crisis, the management of the estate was transferred to the Kröller-Müller Foundation in 1928. In 1935 the Foundation The National Park De Hoge Veluwe was established.
The ORIENTATION TABLE is situated at an elevated location on the estate. From this hilltop there were views in various directions. It is possible that the intention was to also have a view from this point over the museum to be built at the French Berg. The table is in good condition, the view has disappeared due to the tall trees that have grown up.
Description
The ORIENTATION TABLE is situated on a circular terrace constructed in brick. The table, apart from the natural stone compass rose, is entirely constructed in brick and is built up with levels that are offset in relation to each other. On two sides the terrace can be entered via a small flight of steps between walls. The rounded masonry table is surrounded by a lower masonry edge, which forms a kind of bench around the table. The table is provided on either side with masonry steps between walls as a continuation of the steps up to the terrace. On the top of the table, in the centre, a compass rose of natural stone has been affixed. This compass rose consists of incised stylised leaves and the wind directions indicated by N-E-S-W.
