Inleiding
PRIVÉ-BEGRAAFPLAATS met de graftekens van het echtpaar Kröller-Müller en Salomon van Deventer op het landgoed De Hoge Veluwe. De kleine begraafplaats is gesitueerd op een open plek in het bos op de Franse Berg, met uitzicht over de heide, oorspronkelijk tot aan de stad Arnhem. De begraafplaats is aangelegd in 1946 naar ontwerp van architect J. SCHIPPER.
Vanaf 1909 ontstond het landgoed De Hoge Veluwe door het opkopen en samenvoegen van gronden door het Rotterdamse fabrikantenechtpaar Helene Müller (1869-1939) en Anthony G. Kröller (1862-1941). De oude openbare wegen die over de gronden liepen werden afgesloten en op kosten van Kröller omgeleid. Om het nieuw ontstane, ruim 6800 ha grote landgoed kwam een afrastering. Deze door het echtpaar gecreëerde nieuwe buitenplaats fungeerde in de eerste plaats als jachtgebied en buitenverblijf voor de familie en hun gasten. Op het landgoed werd tevens een boerenbedrijf gevoerd. Daarnaast werd binnen De Hoge Veluwe het kunstzinnig ideaal verwezenlijkt dat Helene Müller voor ogen stond. Het terrein werd in haar opdracht ingericht met architectuur en kunstwerken, die allen op hun eigen manier de door haar voorgestane eenheid van kunst en natuur zichtbaar moesten maken. Tenslotte moest op het terrein een groot museumgebouw gerealiseerd worden, om de kunstcollectie van mevr. Kröller te huisvesten.
Ten behoeve van het inrichten van het landgoed wist het echtpaar verschillende architecten aan zich te binden. Van H.P. BERLAGE, de Belg HENRY VAN DE VELDE en van A.J. KROPHOLLER werden daadwerkelijk gebouwen op het landgoed uitgevoerd. De in het complex op te nemen beeldhouwwerken zijn van de hand van de beeldhouwers J. MENDES DA COSTA en JOHN RAEDECKER.
Na de economische crisis werd in 1928 het beheer van het landgoed overgedragen aan de Stichting Kröller-Müller. In 1935 ontstond de Stichting Het Nationale Park de Hoge Veluwe.
Voor de BEGRAAFPLAATS van het echtpaar werden ontwerpen door Van de Velde gemaakt, maar uitgevoerd werd in 1946 het ontwerp van de architect SCHIPPER. Ook Salomon van Deventer, onder meer directeur van het museum, vond zijn laatste rustplaats hier.
Omschrijving
De PRIVÉ-BEGRAAFPLAATS is een vierkant grafveld, dat een open plek in het bos vormt. Het veld is omrand door een opgeworpen aarden wal. Het veld is toegankelijk aan weerszijden via treden tussen muurtjes. In het midden van het veld is een vierkant gedeelte verhard met flagstones. Op een in blokken opgebouwd laag basement uit Maulbronner zandsteen, met afgeschuinde randen, liggen de twee rechthoekige grafzerken van het echtpaar Kröller-Müller, samengesteld uit 5 stukken travertijn. In metalen letters zijn de volgende teksten op de bovenzijde van de grafstenen aangebracht:
"Helena Emma Laura Juliane/Kröller-Müller/11 febr 1869 14 dec 1939/ ik geloof aan het volmaakte van al het gebeuren".

PRIVATE BURIAL GROUND with the grave monuments of the married couple Kröller-Müller and Salomon van Deventer on the estate De Hoge Veluwe. The small burial ground is situated in a clearing in the forest on the French Mountain, with a view over the heath, originally extending as far as the city of Arnhem.
