The register's description

ARTILLERY BARRACKS 'Arthur Kool' (3) with H-shaped ground plan consisting of two storeys with the exception of the single-storey central section. The facades constructed in reddish-brown brickwork in Flemish bond are finished with an overhanging gabled roof with abutting gabled roofs covered with muted interlocking tiles. The rainwater gutter is supported by profiled corbel sets with in the gable a simple, profiled ornamental tie with a joggle. In the facades there are largely nine-pane windows with six-pane sash windows as fanlights. The windows are coupled in groups of two or three under one segmental arch with brick arch ring and natural stone lintel. At the level of the drip mouldings of the windows on the ground floor and the first floor there are hardstone speckle courses in the facade. Natural stone is furthermore used to emphasize the alternating drip mouldings and the framing of the main entrance. In the natural stone keystone above the entrance there is in relief the date '1908' with above it on a natural stone plaque the name 'ARTHUR KOOLKAZERNE'. The FRONT FACADE consists of the front facade of the connecting section between the two side wings with on the left and right the gable end of the wings. Centrally in the facade of the connecting section is the entrance arrangement in the slightly projecting central axis with gable and abutting rear gabled roof. The central axis is flanked on both sides by a natural stone corner moulding. On the ground floor is the entrance consisting of a double, rectangular panel door separated by a natural stone calf from the semicircular multi-pane fanlight with natural stone framing. In the keystone is in relief the date '1908' with above it a plaque with the inscription 'ARTHUR KOOLKAZERNE'. The plaque is finished at the top by a drip moulding that runs across the width of the central axis. Adjacent to the drip moulding is in the gable a window arrangement consisting of two six-pane windows with four-pane fanlight finished at the top by a natural stone lintel placed in a natural stone semicircular arch. In the arch ring of the semicircular arch each window is finished by a separate, semicircular roller shutter. On both sides of the central axis are three times two windows placed side by side finished at the top by a natural stone lintel under one segmental arch with in the roof plane a roof dormer. The roof dormer consists of two coupled three-pane windows with boarded top with rear abutting gabled roof. The connecting section is coupled to the side wings by means of a low, shallow connecting passage finished with a gently sloping gabled roof. In the facade of this passage are two times two windows placed side by side under one lintel. The gable ends of the side wings are largely blank facades with natural stone bands.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE consists of the long facade of the side wing to be divided into a raised central bay, a left and a right bay. The central bay consists of two storeys and a mezzanine finished with a gabled roof with abutting gabled roof finishing off the central axis. The left and right bays are identical consisting of two storeys finished with a gabled roof. In the central axis of the central bay are in each storey two windows under one segmental arch, consisting of a twelve-pane lower window and an eight-pane sash window as fanlight. The central axis ends in a gable with rear gabled roof. The central axis is flanked on both sides by an identical window axis with on the ground floor four small four-pane window openings. On the first floor ground is an identical layout with at the far left and right two times a lower window under two small window openings. Under the cornice are at the far left and right two four-pane windows between the corbel sets. The central bay is flanked on both sides by an identical left and right bay. In the left bay are on the ground floor and the first floor three times three windows placed side by side under one segmental arch. The REAR FACADE consists of the rear facade of an extension of the connecting section with flat roof and the connecting passage with on the left and right the gable ends of the side wings. Centrally in the facade of the connecting section is a rectangular, double panel door with two coupled four-pane fanlights. The entrance is flanked on both sides by three times two windows placed side by side under one lintel. To the left and right of the connecting section is the facade of the passage with an extension finished with a flat roof. At the far left and right are two windows under one lintel, a window and the extension. In the facades of the extension are two coupled six-pane sash windows. The largely blank gable end facades of the side wings are mirror images of each other with horizontal, natural stone bands. Top right in the left facade and top left in the right facade is an identical fire door with glazing pattern and fire escape. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE is identical to the left side facade.

The INTERIOR is largely no longer in its original state with the exception of the stairways.

Valuation

- Of architectural-historical value as an example of a barracks building from 1908 for the artillery in chalet style with well-preserved exterior.

- Of urban-planning value due to the functional-spatial relationship of the artillery barracks with the Van Essen Barracks in particular and the other components of the complex, strategically located outside the Randstad on the Veluwe in the vicinity of the railway.

- Of cultural-historical value due to the functional coherence with the other components, as a relatively rare type with H-shaped ground plan of importance for the history of the Dutch Armed Forces.
