Inleiding

Introduction

Small SLUICE CULVERT in the Veerdam towards Aalburg, along the Heusdensch canal in the Buitenpolder the Eiland Nederhemert. The sluice was built in 1861 in the struggle against water, following the great flooding of the area in the same year. According to an inscription, the foundation stone of the structure was laid by Baroness Nagel.

The sluice follows a simple type much used in this period, executed in masonry with a steel slide-gate mechanism. The structure has been well preserved.

Description

The SLUICE CULVERT consists of a culvert through the Voordam with sluice heads on either side, and a slide-gate construction. On either side of the dam are polder drainage ditches for water discharge. The culvert is executed in masonry and has the form of a barrel vault.

The sluice heads consist of front walls that project from the slope, and wing walls running as tabs on either side of the inlet. These masonry walls are finished with a clay course. The western front wall is cemented. In the interior front wall, which is not cemented, is the aforementioned foundation stone of hardstone. On each front wall is attached a simple steel balustrade. The slide-gate (west side) is made of sheet steel and is located in front of the sluice opening. The gate is operated by a steel construction with a revolving plate. The revolving plate is located in a steel portal frame. This construction may have been renewed over the years.
