Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
U-shaped yet closed RESIDENTIAL BLOCK (I), component of the HOUSING COMPLEX for De Arbeiderswoning. It is executed in the manner of Rationalism according to a design by H.P. Berlage (1856-1934) from 1911-1915.
Description
The western RESIDENTIAL BLOCK (I) has one longitudinal facade (Benkoelenstraat 2-12); the block is placed on a U-shaped ground plan with recessed corners and the short facades adjoining other - unprotected - buildings. The residential block is constructed in brickwork (cross bond) with four storeys under a flattened roof covered with red improved hollow tiles between end gables. The roof ridges are equipped with gutters and contain some roof windows. The end gables are crowned by a chimney. The entrances are closed off above by a shutter and protruding ornamental brickwork. At the height of the first floor below the stairwell bay is a segmental arch-shaped window with two coupled casement windows. On both sides of the window, a stepped console of the bay adjoins, which from the second floor transitions from a rectangular ground plan into a five-sided projection with casements placed diagonally. The windows coupled per floor contain, with the exception of the top floor, a lower sash with vertical glazing bars. On both sides of the stairwells there are three window bays, two with sash windows and one, the closest one, with narrow casement windows, below executed as tilt windows with fanlights. The windows are interconnected by a double ornamental moulding of roughly worked stretchers which continues over the entire block. At the location of the stairwell this is interrupted, however, because here the windows are placed halfway across the floor level. All windows have shutters and rest on rendered window sills, with the exception of the windows on the ground floor which rest on natural stone sills. The facade furthermore has a transom window closed off by a shutter and is terminated above by an uninterrupted cornice with small natural stone consoles above an ornamental moulding with block-and-dart frieze.
The short facade, located on the north side (Javastraat), is asymmetrical in design because the right aisle has three instead of four window bays. The short facade on the south side (Balistraat), has the same asymmetrical arrangement on the right corner. The left part of the facade has three window bays; the entrance is located flush in the facade.
Valuation
The western residential block (I) of the complex De Arbeiderswoning from 1911-1915 is of general importance due to cultural and architectural-historical and typological value as a characteristic example of a block of rationalist workers' dwellings, designed according to the ideas of architect H.P. Berlage and as an early example of corporate housing legislation construction. Furthermore, the block has ensemble value due to the architectural, historical-functional and urban planning relationship with the two other residential blocks of the complex.
