Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Roman Catholic PARISH CHURCH of St. Joseph, a pseudo-basilica built in 1891-1892 designed by architect J.H.H. Van Groenendael.
The parish church is located in the centre of the small nineteenth-century settlement village America and is characterised by a traditionalist building style strongly rooted in the Romanesque Revival style, which is largely determined by a facade articulation with blind arch motifs. Furthermore, the small half-hipped roofs typical of Van Groenendael's architecture are present, in combination with a bell in the gable apex. The church stands centrally in the old village centre of America. On the left side of the church stands the detached parsonage. The church has a spacious forecourt.
The church was enlarged in 1935 by widening the side aisles, addition of a baptistry and confessional chapels to the transept arms, designed by architect Fr. H. Stoks from Venlo.
In 1946 the church was restored after war damage. In this process, the destroyed small staircase tower on the right against the front facade was not restored and the entrance area was somewhat simplified. The traces of this reconstruction are visible in the masonry.
Description
Oriented pseudo-basilical PARISH CHURCH with a short transept and a semicircularly closed apse. Nave and transept are covered by gabled roofs intersecting each other in a T-shape with the bent hipped roofs running over the side aisles. The gabled roofs end above the end facades in small half-hipped roofs, which are crowned by spirelets (originally provided with cross flowers). The half-hipped roof above the front facade is crowned by an ornamental spire with cross. In the roof slopes of nave and transept are triangular roof dormers with small half-hipped roofs and zinc spirelets. The crossing is marked by a pointed roof turret with open-worked bell chamber and wrought-iron ornamental spire. Over the choir closure a multi-sided hipped roof. Against the transept closures rectangular confessional booth extensions covered by gabled roofs as well as the sacristy which is located on the north side of the choir. In the extension of this sacristy a plainly executed flat-roofed boiler house. To the left of the front facade a rectangular baptistry under hipped roof. All roof slopes are laid with slate in Maas bond. Drainage takes place via roof gutters.
The facades are constructed of brick laid in header bond and have a low, projecting plinth. They are articulated by pilaster strips which end in round-arch friezes under the roof edges and by tapering buttresses. Along the sloping facade sides run climbing round-arch friezes. The facades are closed under the cornice by dentil bands. The predominantly round-arch closed window openings have a surround in red brick. At the bottom these windows have a stone seat, at the top a half-brick round arch, covered with a header course. The larger windows are provided with brick tracery. The windows are filled with stained glass, which has been replaced almost everywhere after the Second World War.
The FRONT FACADE is divided into two parts by a string course and closed with a truncated pointed gable. On either side the somewhat recessed side aisles adjoin, their end facades decorated with climbing arch friezes. To the right in the angle of nave and side nave remains the base of the staircase tower which was not restored after WWII, which is provided with blind arch niches and slit windows.
Against the left side aisle is situated the one-storey baptistry provided with a round-arch window in the front facade. The entrance section is set within a built-up frame with small pointed gable. This small portal is provided with a sandstone covering with a keystone provided with a cross. The edges of the portal are built up in steps and form archivolts around the round-arch shaped fanlight. The double wooden doors are provided with richly Gothicising fittings and the fanlight has two brick window mullions. Before destruction in the Second World War this door section was more richly executed. The entrance is flanked by narrow round-arch windows. The upper storey of the facade is provided with a central three-light with stained glass, flanked by blind climbing arch niches. At the apex of the facade are four blind arch niches with slit windows. Under the half-hipped roof a clock face is installed.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has, to the right of the base of the staircase tower destroyed in WWII, three bays divided by buttresses. Each bay is filled with a small twin window. The transept closure has in each side facade of the extension blind at the front a small round-arch window. The upper half of the transept facade is filled by a large round-arch window with brick tracery. Along the facade sides runs a climbing arch frieze. To the right of the transept the facade ends in a bay with round-arch window.
The REAR FACADE (east side) consists of a pointed gable with a semicircular extension of the apse. In the apse are five round-arch windows on a drip moulding built at mid-height. The apse is closed with a round-arch frieze along the roof edge. The pointed gable of the rear facade is provided with a climbing arch frieze as elsewhere, with two slit windows in the closure. To the right against the choir gable adjoin the sacristy and the boiler house. The rear facade of the boiler house has a rectangular door and a rectangular window. The rear facade of the sacristy has two round-arch windows above the junction with the boiler house and at the apex a three-light of narrow round-arch windows.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE is virtually the same as the right side facade, but has entirely to the left the flat-roofed extension with the boiler house and the sacristy with higher roof height. The boiler house has a rectangular door in the side facade. The side facade of the sacristy has twice coupled round-arch windows with stained glass and a door under segmental arch and twin fanlight at the corner. Entirely to the right is the extension of the baptistry with a round-arch window in the side facade.
The structure of the INTERIOR is well preserved and is characterised by a clear, cruciform layout in which the various church components are clearly separated from each other. The entrance vestibule leads to the broad central nave with side aisles and ends in the semicircular apse. In the rectangular extensions of the transept arms are confessionals. Central nave is separated from side aisles by a round-arch arcade with round pillars and moulded capitals. Above the arcade run brick arch friezes. Above the entrance portal is situated an apparently wall-set gallery that opens with a broad segmental arch into the nave. The gallery is provided with a wooden balustrade. The entrance portal opens with three large round arches into the central nave. The nave and the crossing arms are closed by a wooden barrel vault with brick transverse arches, the side aisles by brick vaults. The confessional chapels open with round arches into the transept, provided with an inner arch on consoles.
The interior is provided with a very rich interior executed in a combination of decorative masonry and paintings with, amongst other things, decorative wall and ceiling paintings with natural stone imitations, including marl stone block, and figurative paintings in the apse, triumphal arch and side chapels. Wooden ceiling also painted. The ceiling paintings date from around 1893. The wall paintings date from around 1935. The floor of the church is laid with black natural stone tiles, the choir has tiles with floral motifs. Stained glass from atelier Heijnen from Someren. Neo-Gothic high altar and confessionals; side altars of imitation marble (painted stone). Baptistry is now arranged as a Maria chapel.
Valuation
The PARISH CHURCH of America is of architectural-historical value as a good example of a Neo-Gothic church from the end of the 19th century. The church is characterised by a clear and rich detailing of the facades. The church furthermore stands out on account of its aesthetic quality with arch friezes, relieving fields and buttresses in the facades. The church forms a recognisable and representative example in the oeuvre of architect J.H.H. van Groenendael. The interior underscores the monumental value through its layout, elements and wall and ceiling paintings. The church has important situational value as a distinctive component of the centre of the village of America and cultural-historical value as a particular expression of religious development, connected with the settlement village America. The church represents a matter of general interest.
