Inleiding

Introduction

TRAFFIC BRIDGE over the river Waal located on the national highway Arnhem-Nijmegen, constructed in the years 1932-1936 as a replacement for a ferry service that had provided the crossing since 1657. The bridge over the Waal was at the time of its construction one of the widest road decks in the Netherlands and on the European mainland the arch bridge with the largest span.

The design for the bridge came from the Bridge Bureau of Rijkswaterstaat, which had been established specially in 1928 for the purpose of the traffic bridges to be built over the major rivers. The design was provided by engineer P. STELLING attached to the bureau. He worked together with architect A.J. VAN DER STEUR and chief engineer W.J.H. HARMSEN. Several companies signed for the steel structure, and assembly was carried out by Werkspoor. In designing the bridge, orientation was taken from German arch bridges, but also from Dutch arch bridges. The design follows a type much applied in those years, but without tie rods, which were applied in other river bridges in the Netherlands. In the design of the bridge, great account was taken of the landscape integration of the bridge into the surroundings. The view of the floodplain area should not be too much disturbed by the bridge. To achieve this, high girders with an above-deck roadway were avoided, which characterized the structures of many other Dutch river crossings of this period.

The placement of the Waal Bridge meant the opening up of the cities of Nijmegen and Arnhem, with far-reaching socio-economic consequences for the city, such as the development of the city centre into a shopping area. For the construction of the bridge, Nijmegen photographer and entrepreneur C.A.P. Ivens made exceptional efforts; upon completion of the bridge in 1936, a bench was placed in his honour designed by Charles Estourgie on the slope of the Hunnerpark, along the approach ramp of the bridge. The bridge, which played an important strategic role at the end of the Second World War, was widened somewhat some years ago. It has, however, retained its original form and construction.

Description

The TRAFFIC BRIDGE connects on the Nijmegen side to the Nijmegen Ring area. The approach and exit ramp of the bridge is here laid out as an entrance to the city, with the Hunnerpark, the Valkhof and the Waalkade on the right and left the western cuesta area. The span is located at the height of a bend in the Waal. On the Lent side, the bridge connects to the national highway, between two street facades.

The bridge has a total length of 604 metres and consists of two concrete abutments, two approach spans on each side and a centre bridge. The five spans are executed with arch structures in steel. The whole rests on four piers. The main span with a length of 244.1 metres has a span with lattice arches of the two-hinged type without tie rods. The arches abut against the piers on both sides. The mid-level roadway hangs from hangers on these arches. The arches cut through the roadway as it were. The approach spans are built as pure arch bridges, with solid arches between the piers, and a high-level roadway that rests on posts on the arches.

The structure rests on four, in plan oval-shaped piers, which taper upwards, and slew slightly towards the water. The piers are clad with blocks of stone, which are roughly worked on the outside, giving a rustication effect. Because the bridge deck sits recessed in the piers, the piers protrude on both sides of the roadway and form there half-round tower-like projections, closed off by overhanging dark coping plates.

The concrete abutments are executed as viaducts with passages for traffic. These passages are formed by segmental arch-shaped barrel vaults. On the inside, the passages are provided with a rustication-like cladding in bands of granite and basalt up to the spring of the arch. In the passage on the Lent side, a door provides access to the abutment.

The bridge deck with a total width of 23.5 metres is divided into a roadway for high-speed traffic within the main girders of 12 metres wide and outside the girders pedestrian and cycle paths. The bridge deck is slightly widened on the west side to make room for a separate bus lane. As a result of this widening, the half-round tower-like projections of the piers on the west side have been lost. The bridge balustrade is also not original.

The colour of the arch structure of the centre bridge was originally green, nowadays it is painted beige.

Evaluation

TRAFFIC BRIDGE from 1932-1936, designed within the Bridge Bureau of Rijkswaterstaat by engineer P. Stelling, in cooperation with A.J. van der Steur and W.J.H. Harmsen

-Of architectural historical value as a well-preserved and good example of a traffic bridge built over the major Dutch rivers in the nineteen-thirties of this century. The bridge bears the general characteristics of these arch bridges and stands out within this group in that no tie rods are used, which are used in many other arch bridges. The good integration of this architectural and constructive design into the surrounding landscape, which ensured that the view of the floodplain landscape remained preserved, makes the bridge one of the most successful examples of this type.

-Of urban value as a structuring and characteristic component of the river landscape between Nijmegen and Lent, where the bridge plays a major role in determining the visual character.

-Of cultural historical value, as an expression of a development in the infrastructure field, a river crossing for the benefit of high-speed traffic, which has had major consequences for the socio-economic development of the city of Nijmegen and the surrounding region. The bridge also played an important strategic role at the end of the Second World War.
