Inleiding

Description
Introduction
RAILWAY MONUMENT erected in 1884 to the design of Nijmegen city architect JAN JACOB WEVE (1852-1942). The monument is situated at the foot of the Valkhof to the northeast of Nijmegen city centre, and over the years has been slightly displaced relative to its original location. The buildings that surrounded the monument at the end of the nineteenth century, such as the society Burgerlust, have largely disappeared. The monument consists of a plinth in neo-Renaissance style with upon it a zinc Victoria figure that is a cast of one of the marble goddesses that the German sculptor CHRISTIAN DANIEL RAUCH (1777-1857) made for the Walhalla at Regensburg. In the nineteenth century, several casts of Rauch's angel figures were in circulation, which were used to embellish parks and squares. This Nijmegen cast was made by A. CASSNER in Berlin. The relatively inexpensive material zinc was increasingly used in the second half of the nineteenth century for casting sculptures and ornaments. The monument was erected to commemorate the construction of the railway connection between Nijmegen and Cleve in 1865. This long-awaited connection was a first step to free the city of Nijmegen from its isolated position. The monument was erected at the time (1884) when the dismantling and expansion of the city took place, which can be regarded as a kind of pinnacle in this development. The Victoria figure symbolically expresses the sentiment about this.
Description
On a non-original, masoned plateau and a sandstone octagonal base, there rises a rectangular plinth, more than three metres high, made of limestone. The plinth has a low, profiled basement decorated with a continuous drip moulding. Above this, on each side, is a blind round-arched niche with keystone in the form of a diamond head, surrounded by pilasters on pedestals, which carry a continuous entablature of moulded frieze, dentil moulding and cornice. The pilasters have zinc volute capitals with egg mouldings and are furthermore provided with zinc floral ornaments, one of which on the right side is damaged. The frieze of the entablature is decorated with zinc festoons and masks in the form of girls' heads. On the front of the plinth, in the blind arched niche, the following text is inscribed: 'Eendracht maakt macht - ter herinnering aan den bouw van den spoorweg Nijmegen-Cleve door Nijmeegs Burgerij - geopend 8 augustus 1865'. As can be seen from design drawings and old photographs, in the three other, now empty niches were placed a barometer, a clock and a thermometer; the plinth thus had the form of a weather column. The approximately two-and-a-half metre high zinc statue of Victoria has a zinc pedestal, which is provided with volutes over which bundled laurel branches are draped. The winged figure is seated on a rocky block, has its head turned to the southwest and holds in the left hand a small laurel wreath, ready to cast. Entirely at the bottom left on the back of the sculpture, the name of the zinc foundry is legible: 'A.Cassner Berlin'.
Valuation
RAILWAY MONUMENT of 1884 to the design of architect JAN JACOB WEVE, with a cast of a Victoria statue by CHRISTIAN DANIEL RAUCH, cast in Berlin by A.CASSNER.
-Of architectural historical value as a good and intact example of a commemorative monument from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, with a plinth in rich neo-Renaissance style, which carries a classical sculpture. The sculpture as a zinc cast is typical of that time, when zinc was a cheap alternative to other metals for casting ornaments and sculptures. The sculpture is of art historical value as a cast of one of the angels that Rauch made for the Walhalla, whereby it, detached from its original context, acquired a new symbolic significance. The monument is important within the oeuvre of city architect Weve, who in the vicinity of the sculpture also designed two bridges and railwork.
-Of urban design value by virtue of the striking placement of the monument at the foot of the Valkhof where it enjoys high ensemble value with the park lying behind it.
-Of cultural historical value as an expression of socio-economic development, as a monument erected in memory of the first railway connection to Nijmegen, which was a first step in the process of freeing the city from its isolated position. It was erected at a time (1884) when that isolated position, through the removal of the defensive works, could be regarded as coming to an end.
