Inleiding

Introduction

SCHOOL BUILDING and FENCE, built in 1905-1906 as a public school for Extended Primary Education (U.L.O.) designed by Nijmegen city architect J.J. Weve in the rationalist style with influences of Art Nouveau in the ornamentation. This school building is one of the last educational buildings of approximately 17 in total that Weve built in Nijmegen. It currently stands as one of the few examples of his work that have been preserved. The detached school building forms part of the so-called "19th-century belt" surrounding the centre of Nijmegen. This expansion of the city beyond the canals from the period 1880-1920 is protected as a townscape. The school building is located in the Nijmegen-Oost district at a short distance from the canal, and is markedly situated on the south-eastern corner of Prins Hendrikstraat and Bijleveldsingel. In front of the corner building there is a narrow strip of its own land on both streets. The school grounds are separated from the public road by a wrought-iron picket FENCE in Art Nouveau style.

Description

SCHOOL BUILDING of two storeys and an attic on a composite ground plan. The ground plan consists of three wings. The two wings facing the streets are placed against each other at an obtuse angle. At the intersection of these wings there is a semi-circular projection. On the street sides the school building has twelve classrooms: four in the short two-storey wing on the Bijleveldsingel and eight in the longer two-storey wing on the Prins Hendrikstraat. The main entrance is located in the middle of the wing on the Prins Hendrikstraat. Both storeys have a curved corridor with extended toilet facilities on the two wings at the rear. The elongated hipped roof is covered with red tuiles du Nord. The chimneys and roof pinnacles have been removed. There are truncations at the location of three gable tops on the side of Prins Hendrikstraat and one gable top on the side of Bijleveldsingel. The taller semi-circular projection on the Bijleveldsingel has a slate-covered truncation. The third wing stands in line with the main entrance at the rear of the building. This wing accommodates the stairwell and the former gymnasium. It is likely that the second storey with flat roof was added later. Against the right side of this wing a covered playground has been built: iron columns and corresponding profile beams supporting a wooden flat roof. At the rear of the school building two small non-original extensions have been realised.

The simply executed brick FACADES are laid in English bond and provided with accents in natural stone (lintels, corner blocks, headers, wall stones, cappings, corbels). The rubbed ashlar frame is provided with a drip moulding. The facades are closed at the top by rubbed ashlar dentil mouldings with wooden gutters on top. The majority of the recessed facade openings are rectangular and closed by a header course. On the street sides the header courses are executed in red facing brick. Each classroom has one large composite window: in the middle a cross window with six-pane upper and lower frames and on either side a narrower single window with nine-pane upper and lower frames (rubbed ashlar mullions in between). At the rear the corridors have broad segmental arch-enclosed windows with three-part frames. The extended toilet facilities are provided with a series of two-pane casement windows. The main entrance is located in the middle of the symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE on the Prins Hendrikstraat. The entrance consists of a hard stone staircase of three steps, a double panelled door with small panes in the upper panels, two sidelights with wrought-iron grilles in Art Nouveau style (floral motifs), a hard stone header and a segmental arch-enclosed fanlight with leaded glass. In the semi-circular relieving arch of this entrance section are incorporated the corbels of a curved bay window on the upper floor. Lintel, posts, calf and header with closing dentil moulding of this bay window are executed in natural stone. The lower frames have a multi-pane division. The fanlights are provided with leaded glass. The closing gable top of this bay, as well as the larger gable tops at the far left and right have shoulders, coping plates, red and black tiles at the point.

The asymmetrically arranged LEFT FACADE on the Bijleveldsingel has, to the right of the semi-circular projection on the upper floor, a tile tableau (sectile) with the inscription: "OPENBARE-SCHOOL / No2 / VOOR - 1906 - U.L.O.". The blue letters in Art Nouveau style stand on a light yellow background and are surrounded by white tulips and stems with leaves. Below this tableau a large bell was originally hung against the facade (now in the interior). The gable top on the left is the same as mentioned previously. INTERIOR. The spatial arrangement of the front section is largely intact and consists of classrooms on the street sides and a corridor with toilet facilities at the rear. The arrangement of the first and second storey is the same. The tiled floors of the corridors have a pattern of red squares on a light background. The attic is one large space with collar-tie roof trusses. The rear section in line with the main entrance opens with three coupled round arches to the cross-corridor. The hard stone stair to the upper floor is located in the middle round arch opening. The brick walls and open-worked balustrades of the stairwell are laid in running bond and provided with decorative strips and bands in white and black glazed brick. In the rear wall of the stairwell is a broad round arch window with leaded glass. The round arch opening to the left of the stair provides access to the gymnasium space behind (now an assembly hall). All classrooms and corridors have stuccoed walls and are provided with dropped ceilings. The panelled doors have six or nine panes in the upper panel. The door frames are provided with arrises and through-going posts with worked capitals.

The school grounds are separated from the public road by a wrought-iron picket FENCE in Art Nouveau style. The pickets have at the top alternating bent ends and a stylised leaf motif. The fence is placed on a rubbed ashlar plinth. In front of the main entrance is a double swing gate.

Valuation

SCHOOL BUILDING with FENCE.

- Of architectural-historical value as a typologically good example of an early twentieth-century school building of the corridor type. The object has been well preserved in terms of facade arrangement, detailing and to a lesser extent in terms of interior arrangement (some corners have been closed off to provide additional rooms) and main form (minor modifications, additions at the rear). The object, as an example of a school building in the rationalist style with influences of Art Nouveau, is of significance for the oeuvre of Nijmegen city architect J.J. Weve. After the demolition of several important school buildings from his hand, this object is of great significance for his oeuvre. - Of town-planning value as part of the townscape-protected 19th-century belt of Nijmegen, in which the school building as a distinctive corner building plays a defining role in the streetscape. - Of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-cultural development, namely the improvement of public educational facilities in Nijmegen and the pedagogical view current at this time that the school building should form an appealing environment for the pupils.
