Inleiding
Groot dubbel TRANSFORMATORHUIS (type G4R) gebouwd in ca.1922 in opdracht van de P.G.E.M. waarschijnlijk naar ontwerp van G.VERSTEEG sr. in een zakelijk expressionistische bouwtrant. Het is de grootste variant op het type waarvan de bovenbouw is betegeld met rode plavuizen. Opvallend is het spaarzame gebruik van zwart geteerde baksteen en gele verblendsteen, dat wel in ruime mate voorkomt in gelijktijdig elders gebouwde trafohuisjes, ook in de grootste typen. In de voorgevel prijkt de oudere versie van het tegeltableau met naamsvermelding, vervaardigd door de Plateelbakkerij De Distel te Amsterdam. De brede voorgevel met de houten deuren van de laagspanningsruimten is gericht naar de Stationsstraat. De stalen deuren van de hoogspanningsruimten bevinden zich in de zijgevels. Rond het trafohuis, dat gelegen is aan de noordzijde van de Stationsstraat nabij splitsing met de Boveneindsestraat en de Spoorstraat, bevindt zich een ruim eigen terrein, afgezet met een, in het verleden vernieuwd, ijzeren hek om vernielingen te voorkomen.
Omschrijving
TRANSFORMATORHUISJE gebouwd op een rechthoekig grondplan. Het flauw hellende schilddak heeft een forse overstek. De in rode baksteen opgetrokken gevels zijn in halfsteensverband gemetseld en voorzien van een zwart geteerd trasraam. Ter hoogte van de op regelmatige afstand geplaatste, van glazen bouwstenen voorziene, lichtopeningen in de gevel bevindt zich een dubbele, als een soort architraaflijst te beschouwen, rand van uitgemetselde bakstenen, van elkaar gescheiden door vier baksteenlagen. Hierboven bevindt zich een breed tegelfries dat uitgevoerd is in rode tegels. Het fries wordt afgesloten door een uitgemetselde rand. De symmetrisch ingedeelde VOORGEVEL heeft in het midden een tegeltableau dat bestaat uit vier gele tegels met in het midden een horizontale blauwe band met daarin in geel de tekst provinciale electriciteitswerken. Aan weerszijden hiervan bevindt zich een tegel met het wapen van de provincie Gelderland: een klimmende leeuw op een blauw en een geel veld. Zowel links als rechts bezit de gevel een van een brede bakstenen omlijsting voorziene ingang met een houten deur van de laagspanningsruimte.
De ingangen met stalen deuren van de hoogspanningsruimten bevinden zich respectievelijk links in de LINKER ZIJGEVEL en rechts in de RECHTER ZIJGEVEL. Deze gevels zijn asymmetrisch ingedeeld. In de linker zijgevel bevindt zich tevens rechts nog een luikje waarachter zich de olieschakelaar van de beveiliging zich bevindt. De ACHTERGEVEL is op een aantal lichtopeningen met glazen bouwstenen na blind uitgevoerd.

- Van architectuurhistorische waarde als goed en gaaf voorbeeld van in een tot het type G4R behorend trafohuis, in een zakelijk expressionistische bouwtrant, dat in meerdere varianten door de P.G.E.M. toegepast werd. Van de uitvoering met rood tegelfries is slechts een klein aantal gerealiseerd. Het object valt op door hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het exterieur, zoals de plasticiteit van de gevels (uitgemetselde banden, terug liggende geveldelen) en het bijzondere kleurgebruik (combinatie rode plavuizen en en zwart geteerde baksteen).
- Van stedenbouwkundige waarde door de sterk beeldbepalende situering nabij de hoek Stationsstraat, Boveneindsestraat en Spoorstraat aan de oostelijk dorpsentree. Als zodanig is het trafohuis van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de dorpskern van Kesteren.
- Van cultuurhistorische waarde als goed voorbeeld van een functioneel en destijds betrekkelijk nieuw gebouwtype ten behoeve van de elektriciteitsvoorziening, in combinatie met de opmerkelijk rijke verschijningsvorm van de eerste generatie trafohuisjes. Het trafohuis valt op door de dubbele uitvoering en door de toegepaste detaillering die in deze vorm slechts in in beperkte mate is toegepast. Als zodanig is deze trafo van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van het transformatorhuisje, en van belang als herinnering aan de elektrificatie van de gemeente Kesteren.

Introduction
Large double TRANSFORMER HOUSE (type G4R) built c.1922 on commission of the P.G.E.M., probably designed by G. VERSTEEG sr. in a business expressionist building style. It is the largest variant of the type whose superstructure is tiled with red tiles. Striking is the sparing use of black tarred brick and yellow facing brick, which occur in considerable quantity in similarly contemporary built transformer houses elsewhere, also in the largest types. In the front facade is displayed the older version of the tile tableau with name inscription, manufactured by the Plateelbakkerij De Distel in Amsterdam. The broad front facade with the wooden doors of the low voltage rooms is oriented towards the Stationsstraat. The steel doors of the high voltage rooms are located in the side facades. Around the transformer house, which is situated on the north side of the Stationsstraat near the junction with Boveneindsestraat and Spoorstraat, is a spacious own plot, enclosed with an iron fence, renewed in the past, to prevent vandalism.
Description
TRANSFORMER HOUSE built on a rectangular ground plan. The gently sloping hipped roof has a substantial overhang. The facades, constructed in red brick, are laid in half-brick bond and provided with black tarred rendering. At the height of the light openings, regularly spaced and fitted with glass blocks, in the facade is a double edge, to be considered as a kind of architrave moulding, of laid bricks, separated from each other by four brick courses. Above this is a broad tile frieze executed in red tiles. The frieze is closed off by a laid edge. The symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE has in the centre a tile tableau consisting of four yellow tiles with in the middle a horizontal blue band with the text provincial electricity works in yellow. On either side of this is a tile with the coat of arms of the province of Gelderland: a climbing lion on a blue and a yellow field. Both on the left and on the right the facade has an entrance, fitted with a broad brick surround, with a wooden door of the low voltage room.
The entrances with steel doors of the high voltage rooms are located respectively on the left in the LEFT SIDE FACADE and on the right in the RIGHT SIDE FACADE. These facades are asymmetrically arranged. In the left side facade there is also on the right a small hatch behind which the oil switch of the safety device is located. The REAR FACADE is executed blind except for a number of light openings with glass blocks.
