Omschrijving

Description
Description of component 1:
THE MAIN HOUSE
The house Trompenburg, completely surrounded by water, consists of a large square front house which is connected by means of a short corridor or central section to the eight-sided domed hall situated behind it. It is the dome which faces the road, so that the front facade of the house is on the east side. The house thus presents an inaccessible appearance. The main house has a low ground floor above which is the bel-étage, which contains the state rooms. The domed hall is at the level of the bel-étage and the space below it is executed as a cellar, consisting of barrel vaults with ribs, which rest on a column in the middle. Subsequently roofs. Above the main house an all-round hipped roof clad with slate with four corner chimneys clad with natural stone plaques. On three sides two roof dormers each crowned with a tympanum are installed. As a special feature, a panoramic terrace surrounded by a balustrade is laid out on this roof. The dome roof of the hall has one large central chimney, likewise clad with natural stone and crowned by a wrought-iron weathervane, on which a ship. Very remarkable is the treatment of the facades of both main house and dome. The ground floor/cellar is executed in brick while the bel-étage is entirely clad with vertical painted boards. The front house is built in the style of Dutch Classicism and makes an extremely sober impression. It is five bays wide on all sides, with only an accentuated central risalite in the front facade in the form of a small rectangular projection over the full height of the house, crowned by a tympanum. In this projection is also the entrance, which consists of a round-arched door flanked by pilasters which support the balcony and beside it another window. This whole is clad with sandstone, in which carving is carried out above the door. The narrow high windows contain glazed bars and sash windows. In the projection a large cross window. The domed hall has a projection crowned with a tympanum on three sides. The lower part of this forms part of the passage surrounding the cellar storey. In this passage five statues are arranged, namely Flora, Bacchus, Ceres and Pluto and on the side of the road the Fama. The interior of the house is very unique both on account of its integrity as regards layout and because of the interior which dates almost entirely from the period of construction. This means that on the one hand there are the state rooms with painted ceilings and chimney pieces etc. The domed hall forms the climax of this with an elaborate allegorical painting. On the other hand there are also elements preserved such as an alcove bed wall, the kitchen layout and finish and the pickle tubs in the cellar. Obviously some alterations and modernisations have been made at a later date, such as a nineteenth-century richly decorated porcelain water closet. During a restoration (second half of the 20th century) some less successful interventions were carried out such as the removal of the original wooden floor in the domed hall after which a marble floor was installed.
Valuation:
The MAIN HOUSE is of importance - on account of the historical importance of the memory of its founder Cornelis Tromp attached to it; - on account of the almost intact and unique unity of exterior and interior from the time of construction around 1675; - on account of the original unity with the layout existing on main points and partly still in detail; - on account of its image-determining, monumental location.
