Inleiding

Introduction

Around 1882 a VILLA built in neo-classical style, converted in 1906 according to a design by Hilversum architect J.W. Hanrath into a club 'De Unie'. The accompanying BOUNDARY WALL along the 's-Gravelandseweg dates from 1913 and was also designed by Hanrath. To the east facade of the villa a games and billiards hall was built in 1906 according to a design by the same architect, and alongside it in 1908 a skittle alley according to a design by R. van Doorn. The lunch room at the rear dates from 1911 and is also a design by J.W. Hanrath. The building is set slightly back, at the corner with the Boomberglaan. The grounds are separated from the road by an iron fence on a masonry base.

Description

Composite building with main volume of two storeys and mezzanine on square floor plan under truncated slightly projecting hipped roof, flanked by lower side wings under flat roof. At the rear the single-storey flat-roofed skittle alley and games-billiards hall. The facades of all building parts are rendered white, those of the old villa are provided above the dark grey plinth with false joints, profiled cordon mouldings and various blind windows. The facades of the main volume have each three window bays with T-windows and glazed doors beneath straight-topped fanlights and two-pane windows in the mezzanine. The framed facade openings are closed off by a cornice on consoles. Along the facades a surrounding main string course with cornice on profiled consoles and on the frieze rectangular panels with incised cross-shaped decorations. In the central projection of the front facade (N) two double glazed doors one above the other, on the upper storey opening onto a balcony with cast-iron railings. The main entrance is situated in the front facade (N) of the side wing to the right of the main volume. The broad (originally double) panelled door is richly executed with moulding work and elegant decorative ironwork. To the left of the entrance a conservatory with chamfered corner and above it a double glazed door opening onto a balcony with cast-iron railing. To the right of the entrance a projecting building volume with chamfered corners at the front and in the side facade (W) three window bays with both sash windows and blind windows. Above the central axis of the side facade a hoist beam.

To the left of the main volume a two-storey building section that belonged to the original villa and the single-storey hall built on in 1906. In the front facade of this hall sash windows with three-pane fanlights. At the rear (S) are located the elongated skittle alley and the rectangular billiards hall with virtually blind facades beneath a flat roof. The 'lunch room' has one storey on an L-shaped floor plan, on the west side with chamfered corners, and sash windows with small glazing bars.

Internally, from the old villa among other things stucco ceilings and fireplaces have been preserved, as well as the interior of the lunch room with panelled wainscoting and monumental fireplace by architect Hanrath.

The boundary wall consists of an iron railing fence on a sloping masonry wall due to the slope in the 's-Gravelandseweg. On the left in the wall a masonry staircase that provides access to the grounds.

Valuation

The club building 'De Unie' that came into being in various building periods with accompanying boundary wall is of general importance for its architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative example of a neo-classical villa with later extensions in relation to the function of club. The building is visually characteristic situated on the 's-Gravelandseweg and forms a valuable ensemble with the adjacent building 's-Gravelandseweg 55.
