Inleiding

Introduction

(Former) VILLA in neo-Renaissance style with associated BOUNDARY WALL which was built around 1840 but received its present appearance in 1889, when it was remodeled according to designs by I. Gosschalk. On that occasion the inner courtyard of the original U-shaped floor plan was probably built in. From 1897 the Oranjehotel was established in the building and since 1932 it has housed the public library.

N.B. The extension on the rear from 1995 falls outside the protection.

Description

Former villa of two storeys and attic storey on a rectangular floor plan beneath truncated hipped roofs with red glazed Spanish tiles. The façades are built of brown brick and richly provided with plastered ornaments. In the façades predominantly sash windows with fixed-light fanlight in a plastered frame with architrave. Below part of the upper storey windows plastered panels with scrollwork have been placed.

The symmetrical front façade (N) is seven bays wide and richly decorated with plastered ornaments. The central section of three window bays is raised with a mezzanine relative to the flanking building sections each having two window bays. The façade is horizontally articulated by a plinth and striped courses and is finished by a main entablature with garlands on the frieze. The corner pilasters are provided with diamond-pointed rustication, as are the pilasters on either side of the central section. The pilasters on the upper storey of the central section are executed with plinth, fluted shaft and composite capital. On the ground floor in the central window bay a bay window with cut-off corners and above it a balcony with double glass door in a composite sash with fanlights and side lights. In the central axis of the mezzanine a three-part window, flanked by two nearly square windows, right with casement. The left side façade (E) has three window bays, plastered drip mouldings and corner pilasters. In the centre a flat-topped built-out entrance portico with striped courses and double glass door under fanlight. To the right of the entrance a bay window with cut-off corners and above it a sash window. Left on the ground floor a composite sash and above it a coupled upper storey window.

Right side façade (W) with plastered corner pilasters and on the ground floor a single-storey flat-topped annexe with bay window, door under two-light fanlight and coupled window with shutters. The upper storey has on the left two blind windows and in the centre above the annexe part of a larger composite window is visible. Right two T-windows with sash window. On the rear façade (S) two corner risalits with plastered corner pilasters and one window bay which in the roof plane is crowned by roof dormers with pilasters and pediment crowning.

Between the risalits a flat-topped building section to which the new building is attached.

As boundary wall a wrought-iron fence with volute motif along the 's-Gravelandseweg.

Valuation

The nineteenth-century villa with associated boundary wall is of general interest by virtue of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a representative example of a villa with richly decorated front façade in neo-Renaissance style according to designs by I. Gosschalk. The building is visually defining in its location on the 's-Gravelandseweg and forms a valuable ensemble with the adjacent clubhouse 'De Unie'.
