Inleiding

Introduction

RECTORY, belonging to the church complex 'Oud-katholieke kerk St. Vitus', built in 1889 according to the design of P.A. Weeldenburg (1849-1912) in the Neo-Baroque style, situated on a site on the northern side of the Melkpad and in the north-western corner connected to the church.

Description

The rectory contains two storeys and a roof storey under overhanging gabled roof, covered with blue slate and chimneys on the north and south sides, on a rectangular ground plan. The facades are constructed in red brick on a cemented plinth, while the corners of the facades and the window surrounds contain plasterwork in natural stone imitation. The facades are divided by a string course at the storey division and a profiled moulding under the eaves. The windows and doors are of wood. The front facade (S) is three window bays wide and contains on the ground floor in the centre the entrance door with two lights under fanlight with ironwork with star motif. The upper sill of the door is provided with a profiled wooden moulding, running over the side sills. The windows on the first floor, originally with shutters, have no natural stone imitation surround, while the middle (hipped) window is set in a wooden pilaster surround.

The left side facade (W) contains in the projecting central section on the ground floor a veranda with blue/yellow tiles with yellow stars and red/blue/yellow border, above which a balcony with iron decorative work between the uprights of the balcony, behind which two pairs of doors opening outwards. The attic contains five rectangular windows, while above the pilasters flat consoles support the tympanum with circular window. To the left and right of the risalit the wall surface contains a window bay.

The right side facade (E) contains on the ground floor several windows, while in the transition volume towards the church in the south facade a door is placed above which a wrought iron crown ornament that originally crowned the entrance gate to the Achterhofse church.

The rear facade (N) is three window bays wide and contains on the ground floor on the right a conservatory.

The interior contains original components, including the stucco work ceilings in the suite of reception rooms, with sliding doors between them, on the ground floor and the study and the bedroom on the first floor on the west side. The ceilings are painted in green and brown tones (except for the ceiling with oval motif and central plasterwork in the bedroom) and consist of cornice mouldings in which are cut mouldings and rounded corners, decorated with medallions and substantial centrepieces with angels, leaf motifs and chalices. Further the staircase with stair balustrade with twisted iron balusters with flower motifs, columns with fluting and pomegranates, and lantern.

Valuation

The rectory with interior components is of general importance due to architectural and cultural-historical value as a rare and well-preserved example of a rectory in the Neo-Baroque style, built in the last quarter of the nineteenth century according to the design of P.A. Weeldenburg and as a historic-spatial component of the church complex 'Oud-katholieke kerk St. Vitus', prominently sited on the Melkpad.
