Inleiding

Introduction

RESIDENTIAL HOUSE, originally built as a steward's house near the historic country estate De Wiersse, situated on the north side of the Ruurloseweg. The building was designed by the architects Bloemendaal and De Wolf from Doesburg in a variant of the Reorientation towards traditional building.

The oldest mention of the country estate dates from 1288. After a complicated development history, the country estate with the presumably late 17th-century main house has been owned since 1893 by Aurelia Carolina van Limburg Stirum and her husband, Victor de Stuers. From that time, the house and the surrounding park environment acquired their present appearance. In 1907 the driveway was straightened towards the national road laid out in 1833, the present Vordenseweg/Ruurloseweg. The main house acquired its present character through major restorations in 1912 and between 1921 and 1925. At the same time, around 1920, this house was also built. The building functioned as a steward's house for a couple of years. Subsequently it was rented out as an ordinary residential house. In 1967 the house was internally renovated. The dwelling is accessible from the Ruurloseweg. On three sides of the building there is a garden which screens the residential house from the road and the country estate and is characterised by the planting of rhododendrons and boxwood.

Description

RESIDENTIAL HOUSE from 1920/1922 with one storey and an attic storey, formed by a hipped roof with old Dutch tiles. The house has walls built in half-brick bond which, at the corners and at the location of an originally present veranda at the front, are articulated vertically by lisenes built in cross bond. The building is articulated horizontally by a continuous, partly projecting plinth with a closing roll moulding and a heavy cornice on brackets. Characteristic and essential to the design are four partially tapered and again projecting corner chimneys, of which the originally metal cap plate is now replaced by a concrete variant. The roof sections are provided with characteristic dormers, fitted with pediments on a projecting gutter line and with obliquely sloping claw pieces. The wide front and back facades (entrance facade) each have three dormers in the roof section. The middle dormer is executed larger and contains a double twelve-pane window. The dormers on either side each have a nine-pane window. The right roof section (east) has one dormer, the left roof section two.

The FRONT FACADE (south) is divided by means of lisenes into three unequal bays. The middle bay has the width of the platform in front of it on which originally a veranda-like structure was attached. On this platform two double doors open, each door with a twelve-pane layout. All windows are provided with shutters in the colours of De Wiersse and are closed off by a one-and-a-half brick course. On the left and right this facade contains a large twenty-five-pane sash window (5x (2+3)). The windows are almost square in shape. The LEFT SIDE FACADE has two twenty-five-pane sash windows of the same size as in the front facade.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE contains a fifteen-pane sash window (3x(2+3)) and a modern, style-adapted, door. The REAR FACADE is actually the entrance facade and symmetrically arranged. Around the front door there is a wooden pilaster frame in which the fanlight is provided with a characteristic diamond-shaped glazing bar layout. The frame is closed off at the top by a heavily moulded list. On either side of the front door there is a narrow two-pane sash window. Each window has the same diamond-shaped motif as the fanlight. To the left and right in the facade there is a twenty-five-pane sash window as in the other facades.

The INTERIOR was partly altered during a renovation in 1967. However, the main structure is still clearly recognisable. Both the ground floor and the attic storey have a corridor running almost the full width of the building (tiled on the ground floor), accessed by an original staircase in the eastern part of the house. The corridors are provided with a beam ceiling. In the cellar, which was partly provided with hard-packed earth floors, there was formerly the water pump which supplied the day tank on the attic floor with water. The doors and frame surrounds are still original.

Valuation

Largely intact RESIDENTIAL HOUSE, built in 1920/1922 as a steward's house by Bloemendaal & De Wolf, architects in Doesburg.

- Of architectural-historical value as a good and intact example of a residential house with a particular original function near the grounds of the historic country estate De WIERSSE. The house built between 1920 and 1922 is characteristically designed in a restrained but carefully detailed building style that fits the buildings on the estate. Characteristic and typical are the horizontal character of the residential house, the almost symmetrical facade divisions and the careful detailing of the sash windows, the entrance section and the brick chimneys.

- Of urban planning value because of the striking, functionally determined location on the Ruurloseweg.

- Of cultural-historical value as part of the estate De Wiersse and within the development history of the various estates and country houses whose buildings and layout largely determine the landscape of this region.
