Inleiding.
Het blok, bestaande uit zes ARBEIDERSWONINGEN, is gelegen aan de noordelijke zijde van de Walpoort en sluit op de hoek Walpoort - Sint Janssingel aan op de woonhuizen Sint Janssingel 46-48. De woningen werden in 1884 gebouwd in opdracht van fabrikant W. Grasso, voor de werknemers van de machinefabriek. De arbeiderswoningen werden opgetrokken in een Traditioneel-Ambachtelijke bouwstijl, met een verzorgde detaillering. De woningen werden later uitgebreid met een lagere uitbouw aan de achterzijde. Hierbij werd een gedeelte van de oorspronkelijke achtergevel van de woningen uitgebroken. Het interieur van de woningen is gemoderniseerd.
Omschrijving.
De arbeiderswoningen hebben een rechthoekige plattegrond en tellen één bouwlaag onder een schilddak, gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Bakgoot. Dakvensters in het dakschild boven de achtergevel. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, met een hardstenen plint. Onder de goot een sierlijst. In de voorgevel gietijzeren sierankers, in de zij- en achtergevel eenvoudiger muurankers. De woningen hebben een eenvoudige ingangspartij, bestaande uit een vernieuwde paneeldeur met gedeeld bovenlicht. Hiernaast, ter plaatse van de woonkamer, een zesruits schuifraam. Het meest linker huis heeft naast de ingang een klein éénruits raam. Het hoekhuis aan de rechterkant heeft een zij-ingang. De oorspronkelijke achtergevel van de arbeiderswoningen gaat grotendeels schuil achter een moderne aanbouw onder een vlak lessenaarsdak. De oostelijke kopgevel is vensterloos.
Het inwendige van de arbeiderwoningen is gemoderniseerd. De uiterst eenvoudige dispositie is grotendeels gehandhaafd: op de begane grond een klein vierkant halletje met toegang tot de woonkamer. Hierin een open keuken en een trap naar de zolderverdieping, waar een slaapkamer en een bergruimte zijn ondergebracht.
Waardering.
De arbeiderwoningen zijn van algemeen belang. De arbeiderwoningen bezitten cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, als illustratie van arbeidershuisvesting, tot stand gekomen in opdracht van een fabrikant. The block, consisting of six WORKERS' DWELLINGS, is located on the northern side of the Walpoort and adjoins the residential buildings Walpoort Sint Janssingel 46-48 at the corner Walpoort - Sint Janssingel. The leftmost house has beside the entrance a small single-pane window. The corner house on the right has a side entrance. The original rear facade of the workers' dwellings is largely hidden behind a modern extension under a flat catslide roof. The eastern gable end is without windows.
The interior of the workers' dwellings has been modernised. The extremely simple layout is largely retained: on the ground floor a small square hall with access to the living room. In this a kitchen open to the living room and stairs to the loft storey, where a bedroom and a storage space are located.
