The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The WATER TOWER with square flat-bottomed water reservoirs was built in 1885 in Eclectic architectural style according to a design by architect J. Kalff. It is located on the river Aa, on the edge of the former city centre, at the place where the city walls stood until the nineteenth century. It no longer fulfils its original function but is now in use as a meeting space in social services.

Description.

The 33-metre-high brick water tower is built on a square ground plan and has a flat roof with crenellations. The tower has a sandstone plinth and four storeys, which are separated from each other by sandstone drip mouldings. The moulded corner pilasters are fitted with sandstone blocks in the first storey. On the north and south sides, sandstone steps lead to paired wooden entrance doors with wrought-iron fittings. On the north side, the entrance doors have a round-arched fanlight with radial glazing. They are located in a round-arched recess with sandstone impost, intermediate and voussoir stones. In the arch drum is a lava enamel painting with the 's-Hertogenbosch coat of arms with two wild men and the building year 1885, signed and dated: "LAVEE EMAILLEE MR. GILLET PARIS 1887". On the south side, the entrance doors are located in the same round-arched recess and each have a renewed semi-circular fanlight. In the second storey, the same round-arched recess with sandstone impost, intermediate and voussoir stones is placed in the north and south facades. Within the facade recess, on the first floor, a paired round-arched window with iron frame with glazing bars is installed, a round-arched window with sandstone voussoir stones and in the arch drum two semi-circular arched windows with iron glazing bars, separated from each other by a sandstone column with leaf capital. Ornamental wall anchors protrude from the walls. In the third storey, two round-arched windows with sandstone voussoirs are placed in each facade. In the fourth storey, each facade has a round window with sandstone impost and voussoir stones.

The layout of the interior has undergone some modifications in connection with the new function: on the first floor a new floor has been installed and on the second and third floors walls have been installed. The barrel vaults on the floors are still present, as is the staircase on the north side. On the fourth floor the wooden window shutters are still present as well as the heavy iron floor beams of the upper floor. On the top floor there are two square flat-bottomed reservoirs of sheet metal with riveted connections and tie rods. Each has a capacity of 180 m³. The standpipe, which runs from the ground floor to the top floor, runs through the middle of all floors. An important part of the pipe system is also still present.

Valuation.

The water tower with square flat-bottomed water reservoirs is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an illustrative representative of a historical water distribution system. It has architectural-historical value as a good example of Eclecticism and as a characteristic example of the architect's oeuvre. It has construction-historical value because of the typical water reservoirs. It has ensemble value because of its distinctive place in the city and in the city's skyline. It is well-preserved and particularly rare because of the square flat-bottomed reservoirs and as a water tower in Eclectic architectural style.
